I’m an experienced English tutor. I studied the subject at BA level at Trinity College, Cambridge, graduating with a first. I am myself a writer, freelancing both for national publications in the US, UK and Ireland and as a creative in theatre and other forms. I also have extensive professional experience across copywriting and editing across several subjects, including academic material written for school learners.

With diverse essay and journalistic experience, I have expertise in supporting students in non-fiction work at GCSE and A-Level, and at crafting stronger essays and extended projects with older students. My work in theatre has led me to co-run participation workshops for students of various ages at both international schools and in London. I draw upon my creative writing practice to inspire students to write and read more deeply, and to help them discover individual perspectives.

Of the students that I have seen all the way through to their final exams, whether at secondary or common entrance level, over 90% have achieved grades that were on or above their targets, or achieved entrance to at least one of their desired schools.

Since graduating in 2017, I’ve regularly mixed tutoring both in-person and (now primarily) online. I have worked with several established agencies, and also by referrals. I started out mainly teaching younger students (below GCSE age) but since have worked with older students, and most of the major exam boards: AQA, WJEC, OCR, Edexcel and Cambridge IGCSE. With younger students, I have extensive experience on common entrance: from 7+ through to 13, but with most experience on the 11+.

I have helped students who successfully won entry to schools including (not limited to) Westminster, NLCS, City, St. Paul’s, Hampton Court, Latymer, King’s Wimbledon, and Merchant Taylors’. As a tutor, my approach is to build student confidence through a personalised and stepped development of knowledge and skills. I love to find ways of helping students in individual ways that suit them, and this can take the form either of a very structured or more individual approach.

“It is with immense pleasure and without hesitation that I recommend Gus as an exceptional and highly effective tutor. He tutored my child, in preparation for the challenging 11+ examinations, and the positive impact on my child`s academic development and confidence was truly remarkable. This is why as a Parent I have continued to use Gus as academic support during my son’s early secondary school years.”

Gus is extremely helpful and sympathetic - he takes the time to get up to speed with the exact requirements of each exam board, and to listen and attend to his student`s individual needs. He was able to follow my daughter`s complex arguments and provide the level of feedback she needed. As an Oxbridge academic myself, I can say that for students hoping to progress to university, to have a tutor who gained an excellent degree from a world-class institution is particularly good preparation for higher education.
