I am an experienced, passionate, and energetic A Level Chemistry, IB Diploma, GCSE and iGCSE Sciences and Mathematics teacher with the knowledge, skills and understanding of a range of teaching, learning, assessment and motivational strategies needed to make a positive impact on the progress of my students. Since April 2020 I have been doing all lessons exclusively online via Zoom and most recently google meet. I share my screen and illustrate in writing on a whiteboard, just like in a classroom, and my students are able annotate the screen to give me feedback. There can be also an added advantage of non-verbal feedback if the student accepts to turn their video on. I always start with an initial assessment with a new student to determine their level of mastery of the subject and then come up with an agreed strategy to work with them towards their target level. I start my lessons with a retrieval task to consolidate learning of the previous topic and then link to the next topic with clear presentations, inter-spaced with activities that give students opportunities to demonstrate their gained knowledge. I give the students an opportunity to summarise what they have learnt at the end of the lesson and give them homework usually drawn from the past examination paper of their appropriate exam board. I give my students detailed notes of the module or unit and a variety of activities to enhance their learning. For GCSE and iGCSE students, I enroll all my students to my subscribed online resource on education quizzes website at no cost to them. This helps to engage students and encourage continuous learning during non-contact time. This approach has seen many students improve at least two grades up for over twenty years I have been doing private tuition.

Experience: I have over 27 years’ experience in education in which I have taught A level Chemistry, IB Diploma, GCSE and iGCSE Sciences and Mathematics in the three examination boards: AQA, OCR A and B and Edexcel. I started offering private tuition one-to-one in 2009 and I have found it rewarding to see students who were almost resigned and accepted they were not going to make it achieve their target goals after working with them for at least six months. I keep students focused during my sessions by developing exciting and interesting lessons based on the six effective teaching and learning strategies by The Learning Scientists. I have used homework to consolidate and extend learning and encourage students to take responsibility for their own learning. I have and still use carefully chosen online resources to engage my students during non-contact time and challenge them with full examination papers during revision time to prepare them for final exams. Mark schemes and examination reports have been helpful to help me deal with misconceptions that my students may have revealed in their marked scri pts, so they do not repeat them in the following papers.
