Information about James

I have previously taught post-sixteen GCSE and Functional Skills English Language at FE colleges, as well as tutoring students of various ages both online and in person. The subjects I have previously taught and/or am currently teaching are:

G.C.S.E English Language and Literature
Functional Skills English (Entry 3 up to Level 2)
I.G.C.S.E English Language
I.E.L.T.S
A-level English Literature
Basic Grammar in Use (All Ages as well as International Students)
English as an Academic Subject (In preparation for, and during, University)
A-level Philosophy

I am a relaxed and enthusiastic tutor who demonstrates a patient, down to earth attitude to students and their needs. Before I began teaching full classes, I spent five years working in a 1:1 and small group capacity, engaging hard to reach children and young adults, as well as with those with SEN requirements. During this time, I also worked as a Student Mentor, coaching and supporting young people to access and engage with education.

In addition to the experience I have gained through working in education, I also hold a BA in English Literature and an MA in Philosophy and Literature. Through my studies I developed critical reading, writing and interpretation skills to an exceptionally high standard. This is something I apply to my teaching, as I believe the development of these skills is essential to success in English subjects and the humanities, regardless of the level at which a student is working.

I am also able to work with students of Literature and/or Philosophy on study and research skills at undergraduate and A-level.

Please note that if lessons take place over 4 miles from my address (Mossley Hill) there will a slight increase in my hourly rate to cover time spent travelling, although this is negotiable, if necessary.

I am DBS checked and can provide evidence of this if necessary, as well as evidence of my academic education and teaching qualifications.

Availability: Weekday evenings from 6pm and all day Monday. I can also teach online, which may offer further flexibility.

Willing to travel: 5 miles

Experience: 5 years experience of teaching English in a 1:1 or in a small group capacity in further education. I have also provided private tutoring for several students for GCSE English Language and Literature. I have also supported A-level English Literature students in further education and coached first year degree students whilst studying for my MA.
