Information about Mark

No doubt about it! The new GCSE (9-1) English Language course is a challenge, but with the right guidance (this is where I come in) and approach (believe in yourself and don`t be deterred by what has happened before), you can still achieve a positive result.

In my opinion, personal tutoring is all about fulfilling potential - giving you the one to one help that allows you to work on the areas that you struggle with, not being afraid to get things wrong (a vital part of GCSE English) and turn a two or three into a five/six or even higher.

I pride myself on being innovative in my teaching. It is not just about giving out lots of worksheets with terminology to learn (there is enough of that already!), but by using film, puzzles and texts that interest you (not everything has to be set two hundred years ago) increasing your understanding of the subject.

There is no easy or quick solution to passing this subject - just patience, a structured approach and the opportunity to learn in an environment that encourages success.

Availability: I am available Monday to Friday evenings (from 4pm) and all day Saturday and Sunday

Willing to travel: 4 miles

Experience: I have over ten years experience in teaching, assessing and supporting GCSE English, including the new 9-1 examination

I have taught in a number of different groups and settings including addiction centres, hostels and a classroom environment. Personal interaction, questioning and engaging with learners’ concerns, interests and difficulties and creating an atmosphere of trust and responsiveness is paramount to the success of any class or any session that I deliver.

I have always tried to be innovative in my approach to teaching, but also aware that this should be for the benefit of the learner and not the teacher. Any new material/resources that I produced had to be relevant, interesting and useful. Learning for learning`s sake does not have a high priority for many students.

As a private tutor, my role is to assist students in acquiring better understanding of targeted weak areas within a subject.

Last year, six of the students I privately tutored made the transition from a three to a seven, not through any radical, revolutionary teaching methods, but by targeting weak areas like language features, structure and improving their free writing.

I look forward to hearing from you
