Information about Paul

I have 20 years experience of adult classroom teaching. In the last ~7 years this moved to a mix of in-person and online teaching. Alongside this I have tutored maths (both in-person and remotely) with the main age range here being from 8 to 18 (ie KS3, GCSE and A Level).
I do the maths tuition because I enjoy seeing students achieve what they once thought was impossible and beyond them. I like passing on the enthusiasm and to translate that enthusiasm for the subject into tangible achievement. This makes it all worthwhile.
I have generally found that tutoring results in a boost of 2 grades for those who do tuition specifically aimed at exams.

Interests include rugby, magic (I`ve done a show at the Edinburgh Fringe), ice-dancing and swing-dancing. Being retired I can often be available at odd times.

Availability: My main tutoring is GCSE with students in London and elsewhere around the country. I also tutor several children who are preparing for the 11+ and grammar school entrance exams in the Kent area.
I also restrict how many students I tutor such that I can give all tutees the very best attention as there is usually a similar amount of time spent in preparation (planning, marking) as there is in delivery.

Willing to travel: 15 miles

Experience: I graduated from Cambridge University (all degrees at Oxbridge are BA`s or MA`s). Mine was in `General Engineering` - which is a very mathematical degree. ie there was a lot of maths content to it which I enjoyed and still do enjoy.
Students generally engage in tutoring either to hit particular grades or they might be struggling in the classroom. These situations require different approaches. Each student is an individual and requires a style that works for them so the first lesson (which I always do free) establishes all these factors and a plan as to how to proceed.

My tutoring services include:
- Notes, annotations etc. that are then sent to the student after the tutorial
- Setting of a modest amount of homework which I review before the next lesson and identify areas that need attention. Typically this takes up as much time as the lesson itself and is included in the charge for the lesson.
- at the appropriate time(s) to set and mark exam papers

I would sum up my approach as learning has to be fun & relevant. Everything looks easy when you watch someone else do it; in my lessons I check that the student understands the concept(s) and is able to demonstrate this live in the lesson before assigning appropriate out-of-lesson work to consolidate this.

I have nothing but great things to say about Paul. He is a fantastic, patient and motivating tutor. Due to schedule alignment, we could not carry through with the sessions. It was only fair to leave a review as even the short time we had him for, he had left a huge mark sister who was studying for her GCSE’s. He had really built her confidence on how she approached the maths questions. Highly recommend Paul!

We feel so lucky to have found Paul as a Maths Tutor. My son found the pace which maths was taught at school too fast and he often found it difficult to keep up with the different topics. Paul`s approach is calm and relaxed. He has been able to engage my son and help him discover his strengths at his own pace. He is able to approach problems from different angles, finding the one that suits my son best. He is always positive and encouraging. He has helped enormously with exam strategy and where my son could apply himself to pick up marks. Paul always goes the extra step, working out particular areas of difficulty and formulating specific homework to help address this, whether it is questions, exam paper practice or support videos/notes. I cannot recommend Paul highly enough. My son feels more prepared for his upcoming maths GCSE than any other topic! A huge thank you to Paul.
