8 years of teaching pupils History from 11-18 in comprehensive schools in South Yorkshire and Nottinghamshire has shown me the importance of getting young people of all abilities excited about History by sharing my own passion for the subject with them. I believe that to do this, pupils need to be exposed to a range of stories, sources, historians and differing historical lenses to engage with the past. This approach also helps to build their confidence with the skills actual historians use on a day-to-day basis and which will be tested at GCSE and A-level. As a fundamentally literate subject, this also naturally develops their confidence when reading challenging texts, writing extended answers and reasoning about challenging concepts.

I want pupils to understand that although the past can seem like a very foreign place, when we apply historical skills we can begin to understand why these people would logically make the decisions and live their lives the way that they have. I believe that through the study of History, young people can better understand, engage with and positively affect the world around them.

Availability: Afternoon and evening on mondays, wednesdays and fridays.

Afternoon only on Tuesdays and wednesdays.

Willing to travel: 5 miles

Experience: Teacher of History at ks3, ks4 and ks5 for 8 years.
