Information about Mark

Since retiring from classroom teaching in August 2017 I have continued to share my love of history through tutoring and working as a WW1 and WW2 battlefields guide. I enjoy football (I play 5-a-side three times a week, and support Everton FC for my pains!), running (I completed the London Marathon in 2017), walking, cooking, TV dramas and documentaries, music and reading. I had a reputation, even if I do say so myself, for being a talented, enthusiastic, highly conscientious and kind teacher with a good sense of humour (you need it if you support Everton!) who was able to form excellent relationships with students of all abilities and backgrounds.

Availability: Not available Monday, Tuesday or Friday after from 5pm. Available at all other times.

Willing to travel: 5 miles

Experience: I spent over 30 years teaching History in state secondary schools (most recently I spent 15 years at Bramhall High School). During that time I was very successful (I was twice nominated for the National Teaching Awards for example) and built up huge expertise and a wide range of resources for teaching GCSE History. I have since widened my expertise in exam technique by working as a History GCSE examiner for the AQA exam board in 2018 and 2019. I have also tutored two female students and two male students at A level, specialising in Russian History since 1855, Germany 1918-45, The Tudors and twentieth century British History. In 2018 I tutored a Year 11 boy in GCSE History who improved from L4 in his mock exam to a L7 in his final exams with my help, and in 2019 I tutored a girl in A level History who improved from a C in her mock exams to a B. In 2020 I tutored a year 11 boy whose GCSE level improved from L5 to L8 and an A level student who has improved from a D to a B. In 2021 the boy I had tutored for part of Year 12 and all of Year 13 was delighted to gain a B grade having started at grade D.

Mark supported my daughter through her history A level. He is affable and enthusiastic. He provided my daughter with the necessary essay skills as well as revision tips. He simplified the more complex areas of history, at the same time keeping it fun. We can definitely recommend mark.

Mark was a very good down to Earth tutor for my son who was struggling at English language and needed a bit of lift to ensure that he was going to pass his GCSE (which he did by the way). Thanks very much Mark. Couldn`t have wished for better!
