Information about Mark

Since retiring from classroom teaching in August 2017 I have continued to share my love of history through tutoring and working as a WW1 and WW2 battlefields guide. I enjoy football (I play 5-a-side three times a week, and support Everton FC for my pains!), running (I completed the London Marathon in 2017 and have continued to do half marathons since), walking, cooking, TV dramas and documentaries, music and reading. I had a reputation, even if I do say so myself, for being a talented, enthusiastic, highly conscientious and kind teacher with a good sense of humour (you need it if you support Everton!) who was able to form excellent relationships with students of all abilities and backgrounds.

Availability: Not available Monday after 5pm. Available most other times.

Willing to travel: 3 miles

Experience: I spent over 30 years teaching History in state secondary schools (most recently I spent 15 years at Bramhall High School). During that time I was very successful (I was twice nominated for the National Teaching Awards for example) and built up huge expertise and a wide range of resources for teaching GCSE History. I have since widened my expertise in exam technique by working as a History GCSE examiner for the AQA exam board in 2018 and 2019. I have also tutored two female students and two male students at A level, specialising in Russian History since 1855, Germany 1918-45, The Tudors and twentieth century British History. In 2018 I tutored a Year 11 boy in GCSE History who improved from L4 in his mock exam to a L7 in his final exams with my help, and in 2019 I tutored a girl in A level History who improved from a C in her mock exams to a B. In 2020 I tutored a year 11 boy whose GCSE level improved from L5 to L8 and an A level student who has improved from a D to a B. In 2021 the boy I had tutored for part of Year 12 and all of Year 13 was delighted to gain a B grade having started at grade D. In 2022 the 2 students I tutored for A level both achieved B grades having started at grade C and E respectively, while my GCSE student, who was autistic, went from being unable to cope with exams to achieving a grade 5. In 2023 I worked with 2 GCSE students who both improved by 2 levels of in their final exams compared to their starting point.

Outstanding! Mark has been dedicated, patient and his teaching methodology has been excellent. He communicates promptly about lessons (through tutor hunt) and accommodates changes to lessons if there is any need to on short notice. My son has thoroughly enjoyed being tutored for History throughout Year 11, so much so that he is taking History for his `A` Levels. Best Wishes and Thanks to Mark.

Mark is an exceptional History tutor. My son has thoroughly enjoyed his A Level tutoring , and it has been so lovely to hear them chatting all things history-related as well as all the formal examination topics. We have attended both at Mark’s house and on-line , both equally as excellent. Cannot recommend him highly enough , as a caring and extremely knowledgeable History tutor.

Mark is very knowledgable and enthusiastic. He has been tutoring my grandson for his GCSE in History for the last six months. He has shown great patience and is very thorough in his approach and is always punctual .My grandson has been taught how to approach the questions set and to answer comprehensively. I would not hesitate to recommend him, a first class tutor.
