Information about Ciaran

I am committed to getting the
best out of students by encouraging and assisting them appropriately and by giving them the right feedback. I am also organized and dedicated to delivering learning to students.
My tutoring approach is to be friendly, approachable, patient but firm with students. It is of course important to be organised, punctual and to always thoroughly prepare classes beforehand. Also to demonstrate a genuine enthusiasm for your subject.

I try to make the classes varied, interesting and relevant to the students needs. I also try when required to make my classes less teacher centred and more student focused.

My aim is to create a warm, friendly environment in the classroom and to inspire students. In addition to ensure that their learning needs are met whatever their abilities.

It is important I believe to build up a friendly relationship of trust between teacher and student to facilitate a positive and productive learning experience.

Availability: I have a flexible schedule and can be available from 6pm onwards Monday to Friday.

Willing to travel: 12 miles

Experience: I have a Masters degree in Contemporary History and Politics from Birkbeck College, University of London. I specialized in the Cold War, British involvement in the Middle east post World War One and American Foreign Policy post 1945.
I have had more than 5 years’ experience teaching History and English literature at the British equivalent of key stages 3 and 4. The course I taught was a high school programme, devised by Missouri University, at a school in Vitoria, Brazil.
The History and literature courses covered American history from Columbus to the present day and great number of writers from Thoreau and Miller to Shakespeare and the major literary genres, drama, poetry and prose. It was a chging position because the classes had to be taught in English and therefore they had to be structured in a way that was understandable and enjoyable to students whose first language was not English. It also involved blended learning. The course material had to be made palatable to them and this ensured that I had to be both innovative and creative in my lesson planning and classroom management. It also helped to strengthen and broaden my communication skills.
I also taught English as second language ( ESL) at school in Vitoria for 4 years to students of all ages and abilities. I taught the communication method with an emphasis on speaking listening and writing. It gave me valuable teaching experience and increased my knowledge of English grammar and taught me how to manage people who had different needs, abilities and motivations for learning English and moreover how to orientate the classes accordingly.
I also gave many 1 to 1 private English classes to dozens of students of all ages and abilities. This helped to sharpen my communication and linguistic skills.
