Information about John Sebastian

I would like to offer tuition in English Language, English Literature and German up to A-Level and French up to GCSE.

I find it is essential to focus on a student’s needs and gauge their understanding and perception of the subject. In my initial sessions, I aim to develop strategies for increasing competence in the key skills. I ask open questions of students and encourage them to ask questions too. I am encouraging and always give praise for good effort.

My sessions focus on identifying strengths and areas for improvement, looking at example questions, as well as discussing recent homework and classwork.

I am used to working with both higher and lower ability students but have high expectations of their potential regardless of their starting point.

Availability: Monday and Tuesday from 6pm
Thursday and Friday from 6pm
Saturday: 9am - 5pm

Willing to travel: 5 miles

Experience: In my current role as Learning Support Assistant at a local FE college, I support individuals and groups of students both in and outside class.

I have supported students in GCSE and A-Level English, among other subjects, to help them prepare for the new exams and their demands. I help students to find vocabulary or terminology to formulate their ideas and opinions, plan long answers and essays, as well as analyse and identify language features in the writing of others. My successes have included helping students pass their GCSE English exams. This recently included two students: one with high anxiety and another who had previously run out of time in exams.

Previous to this role, I taught English as a Foreign Language (EFL) in Germany for three years and was an English Language Assistant for the British Council in both Germany and France for one year in each case. In Augsburg, Germany, I gave several one-to-one English classes including online lessons via WebEx. I enjoyed the opportunity to increase my learners’ repertoire of structures, useful phrases, idioms and vocabulary.

My experience of living in Germany and France has greatly developed me as a person and increased my understanding of other cultures and my curiosity to discover more.
