Information about Alex
Cambridge Graduate (Double First) - Primary to Degree Level
I graduated from Cambridge University with a Double First in English, and have a postgraduate diploma in Social Work, as well as an MSC in Children`s Social Work, in which I received a Distinction. I tutor in English Literature and English Language for any ages, and also offer tutoring for entrance exams.
My approach to tutoring incorporates a holistic approach: difficulties in learning are usually emotional as well as intellectual - confidence can fall, frustration build, and make it hard to think clearly. Wor through this requires a patient, kind and understanding approach. With three and a half years` experience as a children`s social worker I am experienced in wor with students and young people to understand mental blocks, undo negative thought patterns, and build a relationship with learning based on self-belief and enjoyment.
Availability: I am generally available at most times
Willing to travel: 10 miles
Experience: I am highly familiar with Oxbridge and University application exams, having taken them myself, as well as GCSE and A Level (in which I scored 9 A*s and 3As respectively). Learning exam technique is a subject in itself (and one that can be intimidating at first) and there are plenty of general approaches we can learn to make exams easier and less stressful.
ENGLISH
Primary/prep school to undergraduate level.
English is my first expertise. I received a double first in my undergraduate degree, have published several short stories, and directed and starred in various amateur and student theatre. English is a broad and rich topic, which I have a deep and life-long passion for, and encompasses reading comprehension, creative writing, grammar rules, essay technique, poetic analysis, and more.
INTERVIEWS
School entrance; university/Oxbridge entrance.
At Cambridge, I volunteered as an access officer across my time at undergrad supporting prospective applicants` in their applications. I tutored applicants one on one, aided in personal statements and interview technique, and facilitated seminar-style discussion groups both in university and visiting schools. Despite this initially being volunteer work, my seminar sessions were so successful in spar interest and confidence in students that I was offered the opportunity to continue them in a paid capacity.
I am based in Cowley, but am happy to travel across Oxford (and at times to Oxfordshire), and always happy to facilitate online sessions. Please do email me if you like to arrange a phone call. I am happy to provide a CV upon request and to further discuss my approach to learning.
