Information about Chris
I enjoy improving students` confidence through fostering a solid understanding of the subject, which is founded on simple explanations and frequent practice using past paper questions.
I use a structured, formal approach to tutoring focusing on weak areas, and building confidence using questions from past exam papers. This encourages students to take the tutoring seriously, and take pride in the progress they can literally see in their results, which improve week-on-week. Even students who don`t thrive in a classroom environment respond excellently to the one-to-one attention from a tutor, and the academic skills and independence that they gain, easily translate back to the classroom.
However, for me, maths and chemistry are not just school subjects that inhabit textbooks and pass exam papers- I am the man who uses the maths and chemistry studied in school in my work, and I hope to nurture enthusiasm for maths and chemistry through real life examples from the news and my own experience, taking dry equations and explanations out of the classroom and into the real world.
To help my students to improve their school performance, I follow the school`s syllabus - going over the basics of new topics before they are studied, to improve confidence in class, which allows them to grasp new ideas more quickly, and progress with confidence. I also supplement the syllabus with real-world examples, and help students to prepare for tests and exams by consolidating their knowledge - going over key points and example exam questions to help them achieve good marks.
Availability: I am based in Porthcawl, and I will travel to areas which include Bridgend. I can teach students in small groups of up to 4, or one to one on weekday evenings and weekends.
Willing to travel: 5 miles
Experience:
I have worked at Tata Steel for many years in Research and Engineering roles, but before that I obtained a First Class degree from St John`s College, Oxford. I am the son of a Headmistress, the husband of a Physics teacher and the father of an English teacher, so to some extent it is in the blood!
I have considerable experience in lecturing and teaching groups at work, but more important to me is the mentoring and training I have done with individuals and small groups, from apprentices to recent graduates and PhD students.
