Information about John
I am a PhD-qualified biologist and mathematician offering friendly one-to-one tutoring in science and mathematics. I have hundreds of hours tutoring and coaching experience, at all ages from GCSE through to adult learners.
Some examples of my one-to-one tutoring services at a rate of £40 per hour:
* Biology, Chemistry, Physics, Mathematics to GCSE and equivalent
* Biology to A-level and equivalent
* Undergraduate and postgraduate life sciences mentoring (also help with data analysis and dissertation/thesis planning)
* Preparation for aptitude tests such as QTS, BMAT, GMAT, employer`s psychometric tests, and drug calculations for NHS and NMPs.
* I specialise in confidence building for adult learners
I offer a fresh perspective on maths and science thanks to my background as a research scientist. I am also a published, award-winning science writer with a wealth of experience in bringing cutting-edge science to life - I have been told by my students that I help them to see tricky concepts in new and exciting ways.
I firmly believe that boosting your self-confidence and reducing stress is the first step towards tackling any tricky concept. I have been told I have a gift for putting people at ease. For adult learners the decision to tackle maths and numeracy later in life is a brave one and I want to be there to help. Needless to say, my sessions are discrete, friendly and relaxed.
I like to try to make troubling topics as accessible as possible. I often challenge my students to visualize exam questions as if they were real situations sometimes as if they were actually standing in a lab watching a scientific process happening! Aside from engaging the imagination and memory in a way that goes beyond textbook learning, this also encourages my students to think like scientists a current priority of exam board specifications and one which I am uniquely qualified to prepare them for.
My sessions last one hour, with full email contact in between sessions. If you are preparing for an exam or aptitude test I provide all the relevant past papers which we can work through together at a pace to suit you.
I tutor online and from my home in Woolton village (L25), where I live with my young family. I have a full CRB (DBS) check available to view on request. I normally invite new students/families for an initial chat online or over the phone lasting about 10 minutes (this is free) prior to the first session. I also offer reduced-rate sessions for groups.
Please feel free to get in touch with any questions you may have I look forward to working with you!

John is helping my 17 year old with the transition from GCSE to A level Biology, which she didn`t find easy. She has grown in confidence in this subject with John`s support in explaining concepts, and constructively feeding back on her essay skills. After taking this on board, my daughter`s class/homework results are rapidly improving. Thank you John.
