Information about Ewan

Ewan studies at the Royal College of Music (RCM) as a Scholar, supported by a Douglas and Hilda Simmonds Award, on the Master in Performance course. Ewan is taught by Richard Hosford, Timothy Lines and Michael Collins. Previous study includes graduating from the Royal Conservatoire of Scotland (RCS) with a Bachelor of Music (performance) with Honours of the first class in July 2014.
At the RCS Ewan was taught by John Cushing and Yann Ghiro. He has also received lessons from many prominent players including Kari Kriikku and Sharon Kam.
Ewan played in the Symphony and Chamber orchestras at the RCS, as well as Stevenson Winds, the wind department’s most prestigious ensemble, and takes part in a number of contemporary performances as part of the ‘PLUG Festival’.
Ewan has competed regularly in competitions, and among his successes to date is coming highly commended in The RCS Governors’ Woodwind Recital Prize and has also been highly commended as a finalist in the RCS concerto competition, resulting in him performing the Julius Rietz Clarinet Concerto with the RCS orchestra. He has also successfully auditioned for a number of apprenticeship schemes through the RCS and has, as a result, played with BBC SSO on tour in India, Scottish Opera and the RSNO. Additional professional experience to date has included playing with ‘MacOpera’ wind soloists from the orchestra of Scottish Opera and with Dunedin Consort.
Ewan previously attended the City of Edinburgh Music School, being taught by Pam Turley, and achieved many notable awards during this time, including the Gold Award from the Associated Board of the Royal Schools of Music for highest mark in the grade 8 clarinet exam and winning Rotary Young Musician of the Year for district 1020 in 2010.
Ewan would like to thank The Countess of Munster Musical Trust Derek Butler Award, Sir James Caird Travelling Scholarship Trust and the Colin MacLean Trust for agreeing to support me through my Masters’ degree.

Willing to travel: 10 miles

Experience: I have taught clarinet, piano and theory for a number of years to a number of different abilities and a large age range. I find teaching both enjoyable as well as informative and I love finding new ways to explain music and alter lessons to suit the student.
