Information about Charlotte

My name is Charlotte and I am a PhD graduate from the University of York, now working as a postdoctoral researcher at the University of Bristol. I am an experienced, friendly and patient tutor and I work hard for my students and expect them to aim high and work at reaching their full potential. I currently offer tutoring to school-age students in Mathematics (Year 7 to A Level) as well as regular A Level/undergraduate/postgraduate Art History students.

MY BACKGROUND:
Recently, I have spent a brief period studying to become a secondary mathematics teacher, having taken a university refresher course for the KS3, GCSE and A Level maths syllabus (Edexcel and AQA). I have very recently decided that classroom teaching was not the career for me and that I preferred the more bespoke approach of one-to-one tuition. I have enjoyed tutoring mathematics whilst I have been studying for my doctorate and during my postdoctoral research and am keen to continue to tutor privately for the foreseeable future whilst I pursue a career in Higher Education teaching.

QUALIFICATIONS AND SUBJECTS:
I have a PhD in British art and cultural history from the University of York (2015). I also hold a Masters Degree in Art History from the University of Bristol (with Distinction) and a First Class (Hons) degree for my undergraduate studies at the same institution. I attended Colyton Grammar School in Devon from Year 7 to Sixth Form and obtained excellent grades. At A Level I specialised in Maths, Spanish, and Art and am particularly passionate about both maths and art history.

MY APPROACH:
I find that the most successful way to tutor is to listen to the student and their parents and draw up a development plan that suits them best as an individual - to work out the areas that they are struggling with and reinterpret them in a different way that appeals better to the student`s personality and memory. With previous tutees, I have focused upon building confidence in maths (as many students feel particularly anxious about mathematical ability) and making the content relevant to the real world.

I have a very creative approach to tutoring, and, having begun my academic career in the arts, I enjoy teaching using visual stimuli and find that it is often the best method for all ages! This is especially true for exam revision! I have an excellent grasp of (and a love for) the English language and also aim to improve literacy across subjects - including in maths and art.

For online tutees, I use a free online whiteboard called BitPaper. We speak through Skype (or FaceTime) and I offer a first free lesson after the initial free consultation to offset the cost of a HUION tablet (£26.99 on Amazon) that the student will need to communicate and write on the whiteboard.

Experience: MATHS
I have tutored Maths at KS3, GCSE and A Level since 2012. This has involved both face-to-face and online tutoring sessions. The experience has been extremely rewarding and I have enjoyed watching my students develop their confidence in algebra particularly. I currently have a number of regular students working on maths at GCSE and A Level and History of Art at A Level, Undergraduate and Masters level.

During my brief period studying to become a secondary mathematics teacher, I have gained some insight and practice in the teaching of small groups and whole classes of secondary-age children. This included lessons in algebra, geometry and number and followed the Edexcel and AQA syllabus.

ART HISTORY
I am a sculpture historian working at the University of Bristol. I have tutored and taught at undergraduate and postgraduate level in Art History, generally via online tuition (including students at the University of Bristol, Kings College London, St. An`s, Oxford University and the University of York). This involved general help with essay writing and proof-reading, often for those whose first language was not English.

I have also taught on core undergraduate level History of Art courses at the Universities of York and Bristol. This was in the form of lectures and group seminars and one-to-one meetings to discuss development, essays, class contribution etc. The courses covered a range of subjects related to art history including philosophy, politics, history, critical thinking skills, presentation skills, and essay writing skills. The courses were very successful and many of my students stated that it was the most interesting course they had taken all year. I have also taught an adult learning class at the V&A Museum on Victorian Women Artists.

I pride myself on my excellent writing skills and my ability to teach others how to use correct and formal grammar as well as how to plan well structured essays/dissertations.

PROOFREADING AND ESSAY SKILLS
£0.01 PER WORD!
I am an academic writer and have published in various internationally renowned journals. I have been proofreading and teaching essay and dissertation skills since 2011 and have a wide variety of students from across the country in various different humanities subjects.
