Information about Kieran

I am an experienced physicist holding a doctorate in quantum physics and a first class masters with honours in physics, I have also won undergraduate and post-graduate academic prizes, have presented my work internationally, and have taught in a university environment since 2015.

For the past five years I have engaged in university-level teaching, including individual and small group tutorials, laboratory teaching, and delivery of taught undergraduate modules in physics, mathematics, and scientific programming. I view communicating and teaching science to be as important as researching, and have always combined my research with education. I have also contributed to the development of the newly refreshed undergraduate physics programme at Loughborough University, providing me with a detailed understanding of the structure and goals of university level degree programmes. Furthermore, I have assessed university level work, and understand the variety of skills - from technical ability, to report writing and communicating - necessary to do well.

My teaching style focuses on helping my students build up a balanced and complete skill set, providing a strong foundation in technical and analytic skills, and re-enforcing these with the problem interpretation, solution writing, and communication skills necessary to translate raw ability into academic success.

Methodologically, I focus on identifying fundamental misunderstandings. In science and maths small misunderstandings in early education can result in a chain of subsequent issues that strongly manifest at university level, where conceptual complexity increases significantly. In my individual and small group tutorials I focus on the early identification of misunderstandings, followed by a process of tracing them back to fundamental issues. I have consistently found that by resolving these fundamental issues high level misunderstandings are also addressed, often across multiple subject domains.

I offer tutoring in physics from A-Level or IB up, and selectively offer tutoring in both mathematics and programming/computer science up to second-year degree level. I also prepare tutees for university, introducing them to university content, and helping them to develop an independent learning style which is necessary for university.

I also tutor those who are academically ahead of their age, I personally started university aged 15, and am aware of the unique challenges this involves, and how those who are academically ahead can prepare for higher education.

Availability: I currently have good availability for weekday daytime slots, limited availability for weekday evening slots, and situational availability for weekend slots. During normal examination cycles I reserve weekend slots for additional sessions, but for university preparation can make some available.

Please contact me to arrange a suitable time.
