As a tutor, I am patient, friendly and very understanding about the challenges students face during their studies. As well as helping my students to achieve their academic potential, I want them to find their education enjoyable and rewarding.

Whilst I have experience teaching groups of all sizes, I especially enjoy working with students on a one-to-one basis, where there is more space to focus on the individual needs of each student. I recognise that everyone learns differently, and therefore tailor my teaching approach accordingly, to keep sessions dynamic, accessible and engaging.

In tuition, I focus on developing close reading skills when analysing and comparing texts, paying attention to the use of language and its various effects, and also on improving my students’ writing styles: organising and expressing ideas fluently, proof-reading and general essay-writing techniques. I feel that emphasising literacy is important at all levels of English teaching because it lies at the heart of English as a subject, and also because good expression is essential in order for students to do justice to their own ideas.

Crucial to aiding my students’ progress and encouraging high levels of attainment, is giving detailed oral and written feedback on both the content and style of their work so that they have clear targets for improvement. In addition to this, I actively encourage my students to self assess their own work, so as to deduce for themselves what they need to do to improve, as I believe that such an active, student-centred approach is essential for promoting independent learners.

I am also well placed to offer help with university applications and the writing of personal statements, and am especially well-placed to help with Oxbridge applications, being familiar with the process.

Ultimately, I aim to inspire a love and understanding of the subject material and develop key skills for exam success, so as to enable my students to fulfil their potential and achieve the grades they deserve.

Experience: I am a fully qualified teacher, with several years of English teaching and tutoring experience across a range of sixth form colleges, tutorial colleges, revision courses and language schools, as well as private tuition, having taught a wide range of courses from A-level and GCSE to general English and IELTS. I have worked with a variety of students from local and international backgrounds, with differing levels of English.

I have worked at St Clare`s Sixth Form College, Oxford teaching the IB, Hills Road Sixth Form College in Cambridge and City of Oxford College in the Sixth Form Centre. I have a PGCE from Oxford Brookes and a CELTA at the British Study Centres Teacher Training School which qualifies me to teach English as a Foreign language. I have an MA (Cantab) in English Literature (2.1).

I have also worked on revision courses at Oxford Science Studies and have taught English as a foreign language at several tutorial colleges in Oxford, including Oxford Tutorial College, Oxford International Study Centre and Oxford House College
