Information about Evan

I am a recent Physics graduate, finishing with First Class honours and coming top in each of my years at the University of Surrey, where I thoroughly enjoyed diving into the full range of topics at the cutting edge of research science. I have always aimed to become a lecturer - there is a history of academia in my family - and so have been greatly interested in teaching others, not just limited to university students. I hope not only to provide students with the knowledge to help them in their studies but also to remind them of why they are studying these subjects in the first place and show them that persisting with their studies can open many doors.

I am currently teaching students from Hatch End High School and Nower Hill High School in Physics and Maths, both at GCSE and A-Level. With the recent cancellation of exams, I am happy to be an all-round tutor for children who now have no academic purpose in order to keep them motivated to remain in education after the end of the current pandemic.

Experience: Throughout my secondary school career, I tutored Maths to lower years as part of a scheme run by a teacher at the school and also ran informal study sessions for my friends through GCSEs and A-levels that often involved me teaching sections of each subject. I studied Maths, Further Maths, Physics and Chemistry up to A-level and Biology to GCSE, giving me a fairly recent reference point for tutoring current students (although I have of course revised the current course syllabuses). During university, I again ran study groups for my peers and sat on the Staff-Student Liaison committee, providing me with experience in resolving conflict, acting on criticism and improving my communication and time-management skills.

In my summer vacations, I have also helped run several summer schools as a young leader, both in an academic and pastoral capacity. They include the Exscitec Science Summer school, held at Oundle School, where I delivered Maths and Physics sessions to gifted A-level students on topics including paradoxes, ODEs and chaos theory; and the Grand un ion Summer school, held at Goldsmiths University, where I was a Second Generation leader, organising small groups of children of all ages in making music and performing to a large group of parents, carers and visitors. While the former is obviously more pertinent to mathematics and science tuition, both have provided me with organisational and communication skills that I feel are vital for a tutor.

I have also spent time carrying out Physics research, submitted for publication in several journals at the moment. I hope not only to provide students with the knowledge to help them in their studies but also to remind them of why they are studying these subjects in the first place and show them that persisting with their studies can open many doors.

Besides physics and teaching, my interests include bouldering in university-level climbing competitions (e.g. BUCS and LUBE); playing classical and jazz trumpet (beyond Grade 8) with small and large groups, in such venues as the Royal Albert Hall and O2 Arena, with composer Mark-Anthony Turnage; and solo trumpet in the University of Surrey Big Band and Grand un ion Orchestra in East London. I have also acted as a Physics Course Representative and taken part in the Global Graduate Award at Surrey, learning both Portuguese and Japanese, which have improved my communication skills, providing me with useful tools to aid in connecting with students.
