Information about Justin Neville
Im Justin and I am an experienced tutor. I have taught undergraduate courses in Philosophy at the University of Warwick and in essay writing at the University of Oregon. I completed my PhD in Philosophy at the University of Warwick in 2018. Recently I have tutored a student at Erskine Stewarts Melville School in English Literature.
I am able to help students of all ages and abilities to improve their critical thinking skills; to learn how to practise close reading a text; to learn how to interpret challenging texts for greater comprehension; and how to write more fluently, and with greater clarity and argumentative rigour. I teach by asking questions and then focussing on the issues that the student needs help with, or which areas of study need to be strengthened. I think that it is important to guide a students curiosity and imagination in order to make learning exciting and new.
In his book of aphorisms Minima Moralia, Theodor W. Adorno writes: Nothing is more unfitting for an intellectual resolved on practicing what was earlier called philosophy, than to wish, in discussion, and one might almost say in argumentation, to be right. The very wish to be right, down to its subtlest form of logical reflection, is an expression of that spirit of self-preservation which philosophy is precisely concerned to break down (p. 70). In other words, the desire to be right or correct is detrimental to philosophical thought, because it harms ones desire to discover new and different ideas and experiences, and to critique ones own presuppositions, which is necessary for knowledge of both the world and the self.
I am able to tutor students in: Continental Philosophy, History of Philosophy, and English Literature. I can help individuals at different stages: A-level, GCSE, undergraduate, or mature students. I am creative, flexible, hardworking, and non-judgmental, and I am willing to help you think for yourself. We can work together and find the teaching method that works best for you. I look forward to hearing from you.
