Information about Rachel
I have more than 25 years teaching experience, mainly as a History/Humanities teacher within the UK state secondary sector but also including six years as a TEFL teacher in Spain and the UK. I have a broad range of experience across GCSE topics, including popular Modern World options and Local History. I have been an examiner for GCSE History since 2016.
At A Level my specialism is in Tudor and Elizabethan history. At Key Stage 3 my many years of experience of teaching Geography and RE as well as History allows me to offer a package of support across these three subjects.
Availability: Monday, Tuesday and Thursday daytimes and after school.
Willing to travel: 5 miles
Experience: As a teacher I have always been skilled at encouraging and nurturing learners on an individual basis. I improve students success, confidence and enjoyment of my subjects by diagnosing barriers to attainment and putting a personalised programme into place for each learner.
I first trained as a TEFL teacher when I came back from working on an archaeological project in Ecuador, where I`d really enjoyed giving English classes to my local co-workers. This stood me in good stead for my PGCE in History.
An opportunity to teach TEFL in my mother`s home town in Spain, led me away from the UK and I spent six years teaching English in a number of language schools, specialising in the Cambridge suite of exams, up to and including Proficiency. During the this time I also tutored students 1-1.
On my return to the UK I returned to History teaching, spending 12 years in an Oxfordshire secondary school. Key Stage 3 Geography and RE formed a regular part of my work in addition to History from Key Stage 3 to A level and Oxford preparation. I also tutored at A level. Since 2015 I have been working as a supply teacher in secondary schools which has given me a privileged overview of the secondary sector in Oxfordshire and has kept me up to date with the many changes in qualifications and the curriculum in recent years. I have covered long-term sickness for classes studying GCSE Geography and RE as well as History.
