My range of subjects taught are as follows:

All these subjects can be taught in beginner, intermediate and advanced levels and in the styles of both classical, jazz and all genres for the drum kit.
I`m dedicated, well prepared and adapt to the student and family goals. My main focus above all is the student`s development and learning progress as well as developing the love for the instrument.

Personal Statement:

Born in Porto, Joao started his musical studies at 4 years old in Porto Orff Institute where he completed the Elementary Course and the Basic Course in Percussion. and in 2002 he applied and got accepted for the Percussion Class in Porto Music Conservatoire.

Over the years, he has participated in numerous auditions and concerts at Porto Music Conservatoire in solo performances and in Wind and Percussion, Symphonic and Jazz Orchestras such as the 27o Spanish Music Festival in Leon in 2014 and the Promenade Circle of Concerts in Coliseu do Porto and Casa da Mú;;sica, while also being the resident drummer in Porto Conservatoire Jam Sessions.

Joao finished his Sciences and Technology Secondary Education in 2013 and Secondary Percussion level in 2014. Since then he had private lessons in harmony and theory, drums, keys and jazz combos. He also had the privilege to study under names such as Sandro Norton (Jethro Tull, Gary Burton), Michael Lauren (founding member of the world renowned Drummers Collective NYC), Hugo Danin (graduated from the Drummers Collective, The Collective School, NYC), Paulo Gomes (Sheila Jordan, Art Themen, Herb Geller) and Joao Pedro Brandao (Kurt Rosenwinkel, Lee Konitz, Berklee BeanTown Jazz Festival in Boston) and Ari Hoenig (Joshua Redman, Tigran Hamasyan).

In 2015 he started the first year of the Creativity and Business Innovation course at ISCAP (Higher Institute of Accounting and Administration of Porto) as a part-time student whilst continuing his music studies privately and in March 2016 got accepted into BIMM London for BMus (HONS) - Popular Music in Drums.
At BIMM, he studied under such names as: Erik Stams (Drill Queen, The Glyndbourne Touring Opera), Julien Brown (Lady Gaga), Femi Temowo (Amy Winehouse, The Roots), John Wheatcroft (Mike Stern, Carl Palmer).
Joao has finished his undergraduate studies at BIMM London with a Second Class Honours (First Division), where he developed himself in the styles of Jazz, Afro-Cuban, Brazilian and Contemporary styles as well as Fusion, Funk and R&B.

During his studies, Joao was a weekly attendant of the Ronnie Scott’s Wednesday jazz jams and the Troy Bar fusion Jams as well as having hosted the Bounce Jazz Jams near Tufnell Park.

In September 2020, he was accepted for the Masters in Jazz Teaching at ESMAE (University for Arts and Music) in Porto, Portugal. Since then, he has had the pleasure of being taught my
musicians such as Marcos Cavaleiro (Kurt Rosenwinkel, Mark Turner, Leo Genovese), Jeffrey Davis (Hal Crook, Terrence Blanchard, Dave Liebman) and Demian Cabaud (Chris Cheek, Seamus Blake, Miguel Zenon).

Aside from gigging, Joao also taught privately in London where he actively taught Portuguese, Piano (Classical and Jazz), Drum Kit (all styles), Percussion (Classical and World) and Music Theory and has been teaching in the field of music since he was 16.
