Information about Paris

Paris is an English language and literature tutor with over 7 years of experience who works closely with families and students to help them achieve their academic goals at 11+, 13+ and common entrance and GCSE, IB and A-Level. Paris has provided tutoring and guidance to families, securing entry into schools such as Rugby, Reigate Grammar, Whitgift, Trinity and Caterham and universities such as Cambridge and ULC. Having lived and worked in Istanbul for 6 years, Paris is also adept at helping those whose mother tongue is not English to prepare for 11+, 13+, GCSE, IB and A-Level assessment. While Paris focuses on the development of exam technique and the skills and knowledge required to score highly in these exams, he also seeks to help his students enhance their ability to think critically and to cohesively structure their ideas in writing. As a graduate of English literature himself, Paris is able to guide his students and let them discover for themselves the themes, ideas and issues explored in course texts, and to then effectively deploy that knowledge in an exam or a piece of coursework.

Paris` approach to tutoring at all levels is focused on achieving the best possible results in exams and coursework. Whatever the level, be it common entrance or A-level, it is essential the student knows exactly upon what criteria they are being assessed. Once the student is made aware of the assessment criteria, the skills and knowledge required by the particular exam are developed and periodically tested with plenty of exam-style practice so that both Paris and the parents can observe the student`s progress. Tutoring is supported by self-study tasks to be completed by the student in their own time. Specific approaches to levels are set out below.

11+, 13+ and Common Entrance:
These entrance exams will usually test a student’s ability in comprehension and verbal reasoning. By focusing on these two elements through tuition in technique and exam practice, Paris can help students achieve their highest potential. Paris can also coach students in interview technique and help them put together a portfolio of extra-curricular activities to present at interview.
IGCSE, IB and A-Level English Literature and Language:
Broadly speaking, GCSE, IB and A-Level all assess English across individual literature and language components. While the specific content and difficulty varies within and across these levels, the tutoring approach is largely the same:

Literature:
It is first important to understand what element(s) of the literature course the student wishes to improve in (students often struggle with Shakespeare, for example). Once this has been identified, Paris will assess the student’s current ability through an exam-style question and will use the results of this to decide on a course of action this will typically include a focus on gaining a deeper understanding of the text(s) and developing the student’s ability to express their ideas clearly on paper.

IELTS:
I have been delivering training for the academic IELTS paper for over 10 years now, and have an in-depth knowledge of the exam, the techniques required to score well and the self-study skills required to improve on your own. I can also provide focused training on specific components (students typically struggle the most with reading and writing, for example).

Experience: Paris has tutored a wide range of students from a variety of backgrounds, and for the past 5 years has been helping Turkish families realise their academic ambitions for their children by preparing students for UK school entrance exams, as well as GCSE/IB/A-Level courses. Previous to this Paris had worked with several students, focusing mainly on GCSE English.Paris also has a wealth of experience in delivering IELTS preparation courses, and has helped students achieve scores of 7.5+.
Now back in the UK, Paris is keen to continue helping students develop their ability in English language and literature. Paris offers a thorough understanding of the syllabuses of each exam board and a friendly, engaging teaching style.

Paris is a well organised & structured tutor who tailors the lessons according to the student`s individual needs & weaknesses. He has also spent time marking practice papers in his own time before going through them in the lesson. Highly recommended!

Our daughter, who is studying for her GCSEs has now had several one-to-one sessions in English with Paris and she has already shown a marked improvement which her school has also noted. Paris has made a vast improvement to her approach and has been very easy to work with from both a parent and student point of view. thanks !
