Information about William
How often does the phrase "But when am I going to use this in real life" crop up when learning about maths? And how often does this question get a meaningful response? The answer is simple: Maths is vital for the development of critical and logical thinking skills, as well as the ability to approach new situations calmly and with a clear head. The real-world applications of what is learned during physics classes are more immediately obvious. I believe that it is vital to be able to marry the graphical and algebraic parts of a problem question with an ability to mentally `see` an example of what these mathematical concepts describe. It is much easier for a student to understand what is meant by a graph of harmonic motion when they visualise a swinging pendulum, for instance, rather than by only looking at a set of graphs on a page. In my lessons, I will aim to achieve both the development of mathematical understanding with regards to exams as well as the logical life skills that the learning process will bring.

Experience: I am a recent graduate from Newcastle University with a first class Masters in mechanical engineering. I`m 22, and since the age of 16 I have worked in two local authority pools (one in Liverpool and one in Newcastle) as a Level 2 swimming instructor. I have taught pupils aged 2-60, and I also have experience in leading local scout groups. As a result, I understand the importance of engaging students in an activity to bring out the best in themselves and, hopefully, develop an enjoyment of a subject they might otherwise dislike. As someone who didn`t begin to enjoy maths until their A-Levels, I can empathise with and appreciate the difficulty that some students have in maintaining an enthusiasm for the subject. I will do my utmost to provide encouragement and enjoyment during my lessons and ensure that my students achieve their full potential when exams eventually come calling.
