I am a Cambridge ESOL-accredited teacher with over 16 years’ teaching and tutoring experience, working with students from primary level through to GCSE, A-Level, university and adult education. I have undertaken postgraduate study in History to PhD level, taught undergraduate seminars at university and worked as a Senior Examiner for the British Council, where I managed entrance-exam assessments for leading schools in China.

I believe the greatest advantage of one-to-one tuition is that teaching can be genuinely individualised. I begin by identifying a student`s existing knowledge, strengths and difficulties, then design lessons and a study plan around the areas that will make the greatest difference.

My teaching combines clear explanation, modelling and guided practice with questioning and independent application. I break difficult topics and skills into manageable components, concentrating first on the core principles that can produce rapid improvement. Once these are secure, we revisit, practise and extend them to develop deeper understanding and long-term retention. Regular review and retrieval ensure that material is not simply understood during a lesson, but remembered and applied independently.

My approach is patient, warm and encouraging, while remaining academically ambitious. Students learn best when they feel comfortable making mistakes and know their tutor is on their side. Some students come to me needing confidence and encouragement; others are already high achievers who need greater challenge. I adapt accordingly.

I particularly enjoy working with students who have become frustrated with a subject or lost confidence in their ability. By making difficult concepts understandable and giving students clear strategies for succeeding independently, I aim to replace reluctance with confidence, curiosity and a sense of progress.

Lessons are focused on results but remain lively and engaging, incorporating discussion, challenges, games and varied activities where appropriate. I am also happy to mark work between lessons and provide parents with clear feedback on what we have covered, progress made and priorities for future lessons.

My ultimate aim is not simply to help students perform better in the next test or examination, but to give them the knowledge, confidence and independent learning skills to succeed without my help.

School Admissions, 11+/13+, English & Interviews

I specialise in competitive school admissions, particularly 11+ and 13+ English, with additional experience of 8+, 9+, 10+, 12+ and 16+ entry. I also prepare students for pre-tests and assessments including ISEB, UKiset, CEM, CAT4 and SATs.

Students I have taught have gained places at leading schools including St Paul’s, Winchester College, Hampton, Abingdon and St Mary’s Ascot.

My preparation is tailored to the individual student and their target schools. Selective schools vary considerably in what they assess: some use traditional comprehension and composition papers, while others place greater emphasis on literary analysis, unfamiliar texts, critical thinking or their own distinctive admissions formats. Where appropriate, I create bespoke practice questions and papers reflecting these demands, alongside model responses and guided practice.

English admissions preparation includes:

Creative writing — practical processes for generating, developing and structuring ideas
Comprehension — inference, vocabulary, close reading and writers` techniques
Persuasive and discursive writing — developing and supporting convincing arguments
Literary analysis — moving beyond technique-spotting towards interpretation and evaluation

I aim not simply to prepare students for a particular paper, but to develop the transferable reading, writing and thinking skills they will need to thrive once they reach a demanding school.

Having gained admission to Manchester Grammar School myself, I also have personal experience of highly selective education alongside my professional experience preparing students for it.

School Interview Preparation

I prepare students for both traditional admissions questions and the more unexpected questions used by selective schools to explore how candidates think.

Rather than scri pting answers or putting words into a student`s mouth, I teach students how to develop an idea, justify an opinion, think aloud, respond to follow-up questions and express their own personality confidently.

For students who are nervous about interviews, we gradually build familiarity and confidence through guided practice and realistic mock interviews. For stronger candidates, I introduce increasingly challenging questions requiring critical thinking, interpretation and intellectual flexibility.

GCSE & A-Level English

I teach English Language and English Literature at GCSE and iGCSE, including exam preparation, past papers, essay writing and revision.

For Literature, I teach students how to move beyond identifying quotations and techniques towards developing interpretations, analysing language closely, considering alternative readings and constructing a coherent argument across an essay.

For English Language, I teach the underlying processes involved in creative, descri ptive, persuasive and analytical writing, alongside comprehension, inference and language analysis.

I can also provide English and essay-writing support at A-Level where appropriate.

GCSE & A-Level History

As a postgraduate historian, History is one of my principal specialist subjects. I teach GCSE, iGCSE and A-Level students, including preparation for AQA, OCR, Pearson Edexcel and Cambridge International examinations.

A particular strength of my teaching is helping students who know the subject but struggle to convert that knowledge into marks.

Rather than simply telling students to “be more analytical”, I explicitly model what historical analysis looks like. We work on interpreting the question, developing a thesis, selecting evidence, explaining significance, sequencing arguments, considering counterarguments, evaluating competing explanations and reaching substantiated judgements.

Essay Writing — Humanities & Social Sciences

I also provide specialist essay-writing and study-skills support for students taking other essay-based humanities and social-science subjects, including Politics, Sociology, Ancient History/Classical Civilisation and Philosophy.

Depending on the subject and level, we can work on:

Students frequently understand their subject but find that their essays become descri ptive, repetitive or unfocused. I use modelling and worked examples to make the normally invisible process of good essay writing explicit, before gradually withdrawing support so students can reproduce it independently.

University-Level Study

As a Graduate Teaching Assistant at the University of Manchester, I taught undergraduate seminars, marked undergraduate work, provided feedback and supported students with research methods, study skills and academic writing.

I have undertaken postgraduate study in History to PhD level. My research focused on twentieth-century British cultural history, particularly self-help culture and changing conceptions of the individual in postwar Britain. I presented part of this research at the Rethinking Modern British Studies conference in 2015, receiving very positive academic feedback.
