Information about Andrew
My lessons are designed to build confidence in mathematics, drawing on my experience teaching key stages 3 and 4 (ages 11-16) in large secondary schools. This may start from filling in the gaps in basic knowledge or providing an opportunity to practise and embed weaker topics, up to challenging questions to develop a wider understanding of mathematics and its structure.
Before teaching, my background was in finance, so I like to draw upon real-life examples wherever possible to show the relevance of mathematical skills. However, mathematics is also about learning general strategies for problem-solving and even the most abstract problems should be approached in this positive way, turning I dont understand into What do I know? and I cant do this into What can I do?
For adult learners, I build confidence in the subject with a relaxed and informal structure geared to your specific areas for improvement. where necessary I create examples tailored to your interests and experience.
With a first-class honours degree in mathematics I bring a life-long passion and enthusiasm for the subject and a will to pass that enthusiasm to a new generation of students. My style of teaching is focused, but relaxed and unpressured, allowing students to progress at a pace suited to them. I have a PGCE in secondary education and up-to-date DBS.
Availability: I am free most week evenings for regular appointments but due to work commitments this will be from 8pm. I am happy to work on-line or provide tuition at my home in West Hampshire..
