Information about Paul

Award winning and experienced HE lecturer offers private tuition in all social science subjects and primarily in Politics/Government, Political Economy, European Studies and International Relations.

Availability: Weekdays and weekends, daytime and evenings

Willing to travel: 30 miles

Experience: I was Principal Lecturer in Politics/IR at Portsmouth University, Associate Head of the School of Social Historical and Literary Studies (2003-11) before moving up to a Faculty job. Overall I taught in HE at Portsmouth from 1998 until September 2015. I decided to take a voluntary career break in 2015 to develop a variety of my own pet projects but I continue to offer tuition on a private basis across the social sciences to undergraduate, postgraduate and A-level students.

During my time at Portsmouth I was nominated for and won several teaching awards including ‘Most Innovative Lecturer’ and ‘Best Feedback’. A major strength that I have is to give you very positive, encouraging and constructive developmental feedback on your ideas, plans and writing combined with broad and deep subject knowledge. As a lecturer I am highly engaging, dynamic and open and I have a gift to explaining complicated concepts in very clear and accessible ways using stories, metaphors and analogies.

I have been a Fellow of the Higher Education Academy and previously the ILT since 2001, and am currently completing my Senior Fellow status application.

I am in addition an experienced personal and study skills tutor, a role I always took seriously at University. I see the role of a tutor as partly that of a ‘coach’, facilitating as much as possible your own development as a student. I honed this approach over time as a lecturer and it was especially useful in dissertation supervision at both undergraduate and postgraduate level.

In addition to offering private tutoring I am also an accredited trainer and life coach, as well as a proof reader. So the skills sets I bring to private tuition are more diverse than just lecturing / teaching although of course I also do have that extensive classroom and tutoring experience you require (18 years!).
My main specialisms are: international and global political economy, economics for non-specialists and social scientists, public policy, British politics, comparative politics, political ideas and theory, political ideologies, international relations.

5/5 Rating

Paul is an excellent tutor. He conducts his sessions with great humour and charm. I found him to be an extremely effective proof-reader with an eye for attention to detail, and he improved my writing skills enormously during our time together. Further to this, Paul has tremendous knowledge in many different fields and as such proved very useful to me for different topics and assignments. He was always willing to go the extra mile. I would not hesitate to use Paul in the future.
