Information about Philip

I love the classics and enjoy sharing my enthusiasm with my students.

CURRENTLY, I DO MOST OF MY TEACHING ON SKYPE (THAT IS, OVER THE INTERNET).

I enjoy teaching and my students have always achieved good results: around 94% A and A* in all classical subjects at AS and A Level. My university students similarly achieve high grades.

My students thrive because I supply them with both an identifiable structure which they find reassuring and the opportunity for self-expression that they find enabling.

I am fluent in both Latin and Greek and have, for about twelve years:

__Taught the languages at SECONDARY examination level.
__Taught Classical Civilisation at AS and A Level.
__Taught Ancient History at A level.

Over the last five years or so I have:

__Taught just about everything classics-orientated at UNDERGRADUATE level.

In terms of school-level teaching:

__I know the major exam board syllabuses for all the Classical subjects but I also believe in teaching the “human” side of the Classics.

__I use a variety of learning and teaching methods, including, for example, role-play, Roman cookery and, where possible, field trips.

__I believe that teaching and learning are active processes that it is important for students to actively participate in their learning that there should be frequent changes of stimulus and that the teacher’s voice should not be the only one to be heard in a lesson.

__I have supervised some very successful A-Level dissertations.

I have always loved both Greek and Roman culture. Epic (Greek and Roman) is a specialism. Another genuine interest is Greek drama. My MA is in Greek material culture – especially vases, statuary and inscri ptions.

Philip was an amazing help to me, and managed to teach me in two weeks what University Professors failed to in three months! He was a pleasure to work with and a brilliant man! Cannot thank him enough!

My daughter has been studying class civ with Phillip for a term. Philip has been very positive and supportive to her. She really enjoys her lessons and feels she is getting a lot from the course. Phillp has also be helpful discussing university applications. I wish we had found him sooner.

First lesson. Very engaging and fun to learn new things. I enjoyed the class. :)

There was a misunderstanding earlier on.
