I am an experienced Head of English and examiner, who has often worked one-to-one with students to help them fulfil their potential. I know what can help students have that lightbulb moment when they "get it" for the first time. I also know first-hand what examiners are looking for when marking students` papers.
From making a difference at KS3 to helping students get the Oxbridge or university place they are looking for, I have a track record of success I am keen to share.
Availability: Evenings and weekends in term-time; any time in school holidays

Experience: Currently Head of English at an outstanding comprehensive; also worked previously as Head of an outstanding English department in a highly successful grammar school. John tutored my daughter GCSE English Lit and Lang throughout Y11 (2023-2024). The sessions were online. John is a great tutor. He is incredibly knowledgeable. He has a calm demeanour, and is encouraging, supportive and positive. Feedback on work is always constructive and he builds confidence even when correcting work or encouraging the student to think again. My daughter is a very capable student but had lost confidence and wasn’t feeling supported in English at school, so we enlisted John to help provide the support and feedback that was lacking from school. John helped her achieve her goal of Grade 9s in Eng Lang and Lit GCSES in 2024. I highly recommend John as an English tutor.

John assisted my daughter with English when she was in year 10. He was always diligent and was able to connect with her in a way that enabled her to understand the subject better and improve her written work. He was 100% reliable throughout the period he assisted us and I can not recommend him highly enough.

Our daughter has only had one lesson so far but we were really pleased and impressed. John responded very promptly to all my emails.
