Information about Alan
I am qualified teacher with over 5 years experience.
I find tutoring particularly rewarding as I am able to provide uninterrupted 1:1 support and can see results over the course of a session.
I tutor Maths (up to GCSE), English and the 11+ entrance exams for grammar schools.
I always make sure to tailor my lessons to the individual. Initially by identifying any gaps in their learning and addressing those first before moving on to learning new skills all the while making sure to tackle any misconceptions that may occur.
I use the mastery approach to give students a deep understanding of their knowledge; this allows them to apply the skills they have learnt in a variety of ways and ensures that when they are presented with an unfamiliar style of question they have the ability to decode and answer it.
As time goes on and I build a greater rapport with a student, learning about their likes and dislikes, I use these to create more engaging lessons.
Willing to travel: 8 miles
Experience: My route into teaching began after having children of my own; initially as a volunteer reader before becoming an Learning Support Assistant working with children either 1:1 or in small groups and with experience covering whole classes. This then led me to undertake a PGCE and become a fully fledged class teacher.
At the primary level, I have taught every year group from 1-6, though have spent most of my time in UKS2 (Year 5 and 6).
This year I have changed roles, moving to a Secondary setting, where I have more of a focus on maths (particularly with students doing their GCSEs) as well as using my experience from Primary to support the younger years across their studies.
