Information about Charlotte
From an early age tutoring has been a prominent part of my life. I studied Mathematics at the educational organisation, Kumon, for 10 years. This helped build my confidence and encouraged me to study independently. As a result of this I believe I understand first-hand what it is like to be in the shoes of a tutee as well as a tutor.
I am currently in my second year at Exeter University studying Mathematics and English Literature after taking Maths, Further Maths and English Literature at A-Level. I also enjoy running, swimming and am deputy editor for a fashion and beauty section in one of Exeter’s magazines. I really enjoy working with children and have spent the past summer au pairing and tutoring in France.
Availability: I am available during term times to tutor in the student`s home. I am available during weekdays and weekends.
Willing to travel: 5 miles
Experience: At the age of 15 I was approached to become an assistant instructor at a Kumon centre. I worked at Kumon for four years I had to mark student’s work and be prepared to explain concepts in a clear and concise way so students could continue working quickly and correctly. There would often be up to 30 students in a class, with ages ranging from 3-17, so a strong understanding of all levels of Maths was essential.
Using this experience, at the age of 16, I set up my own Maths tutoring business which I continue to run now teaching one-one sessions with children aged 8-15. I focused particularly on helping children in Year 6 with the preparation for their SAT’s, so understand and have experience in dealing with children’s stress and worries about exams. I believe that teaching children with a large range of abilities and learning styles has strengthened my communication skills and enabled me to teach to the individual needs of the learner.
I am able to tutor up to GCSE level. I use a broad range of teaching techniques to make the lessons interesting, fun and memorable so each type of learner can fully understand the concepts being taught. I think it is extremely important to increase a student’s confidence through their learning and encourage them to think independently, while studying in an interesting and enjoyable way. I understand that one-one tuition can be an invaluable investment into a child’s education, which will not only affect their performance in the subject area, but also their confidence and overall attitude to the way the approach their learning at school
For this reason I begin by consolidating topics that the student has previously covered, to make sure they have a good understanding and foundation, enabling them to move onto harder concepts. I revise topics regularly in each lesson so students can use and build upon the knowledge they have already learnt. This will also help them to practice applying their knowledge on a regular basis, which is often a common problem students have when approaching exam style questions.
