Information about Jerold

Hi, my name is Jerold and I am a film composer, band arranger and multi-instrumentalist specialising in teaching piano (jazz or classical), music theory as well as academic music. I perform regularly in venues around London as well as compose music for short films and have just started working in theatre as well. I find it tremendously satisfying passing on the knowledge and expertise I have gained working in these various musical settings to my students to hopefully inspire them to take their musical skill and knowledge to the next level.

Whether it be performance, theory, production, academic examinations, composition or just a bit of everything, I am happy to accommodate your needs and mould my teaching to each individual student.

I have a deep understanding of music theory (Grd. 8 ABRSM) and history (Bachelors degree) in a wide variety of genres and styles, having studied, arranged for and performed in many different settings, from classical orchestras and big bands to rock groups and jazz combos. I also have a Masters degree in Composition of Music in Film and Television from the University of Bristol, studying under composers William Goodchild, Martin Kiszko and Richard Blackford.

Too often the traditional ABRSM classical approach confuses students and puts students off developing an interest and thirst for knowledge in music. As a composer, arranger and multi-instrumentalist working in a variety of genres and traditions, my goal is to inspire my students to understand music on a deeper level, encouraging them to explore what excites them and opening their minds up to the wider world within music, taking their ability to the next level.

I am originally from Hong Kong and am fully bilingual in English and Cantonese with fairly good fluency in Mandarin, so I am happy to teach Cantonese and basic to intermediate Mandarin to those who are interested as well.

Availability: I am available most afternoons and early evenings during the weekdays and afternoons for the weekends.

Willing to travel: 4 miles

Experience: I have been tutoring for 2 years now, helping students get through their music theory exams as well as GCSEs and A Level. I have taught jazz piano extensively as well during this time. I have also done part-time work as a teacher teaching children as young as 5 years old basic music theory and skills.

Jerold knows how to bring out the best in your child’s music playing. He is patient and works on the melodies in the piece- analysing the nuances hence creating a performance piece level. Jerold is very talented on the Jazz side and knowledgable on music theory also.
