Information about Louise

I am a warm hearted middle aged lady. I have brought up three children who are now well rounded young adults and I have always worked in education, in mainstream and in special education. I am passionate about learning and helping others realise their potential.

Availability: Week days and after school. If preferred, I can tutor students in my own home from a comfortable study, but I am currently only available online.

Willing to travel: 3 miles

Experience: I am a qualified teacher with considerable experience of teaching and tutoring in General Science and separate Sciences including Biology,Chemistry . I have been an accredited Special Educational Needs Coordinator and am qualified to identify and teach children and young people with Dyslexia. I will work with students and aim to reduce the barriers to learning and making progress. These could be, for example, difficulties in understanding principles and concepts of the subject, or lack of revision technique and exam practice. I make sessions as interesting, varied and as enjoyable as possible and I aim to leave the student with a sense of achievement and a positive outlook after each session.

I have been tutoring online now for over a year. All the students I have tutored in this way (including private students) have achieved their specific goals. As examples, two of these have been accepted at Universities and others have now started sixth form to continue learning at `A` Level.

I prefer a hybrid teaching and learning style, with some of the session being student led and some being tutor led. I generally use ZOOM and other applications such as EDMODO and Padlet. These are simple for students to use and are useful for communicating ideas and concepts and also for formative assessment. I usually set short independent activities to be completed between sessions; these help students to revisit the key learning points and orientate them to the next session. Obviously, these are subject to negotiation and are dependent on any other student commitments.

A typical session would begin with identifying specific session outcomes linked to the exam board syllabus. These would then be revisited at the end of the session to check understanding and formative assessment, for both myself and the student. I like to maintain a certain pace during the session and will use various activities such as video clips, quizzes, mini tests, mind-maps and brainstorms to increase student engagement.

Preparation for examinations is key to achieving predicted grades and I have, this last year, communicated with the students` teachers to ensure all parts of the syllabus are covered. I include past paper questions, revision techniques and summative assessment at the end of a topic and near to examination dates. Extra sessions can be bolted on if necessary as the examination period approaches. I care deeply that each student reaches their goals and will work hard to ensure they do.

Louise has been really responsive and flexible. She has introduced my daughter to helpful resources and allowed her to identify the areas where she needs the most help.
