Information about Ian

I completed my degree in astrophysics at UCLAN and went on to complete a PGCE in physics and mathematics at Manchester University in 1990. I then started teaching and have taught in two different schools up until April of this year.
During my career I have taught a massive range of age and ability and have always striven to bring out the best in the pupils I teach. A number of my A level students have left my physics A level classes to attend many of the top universities, including Cambridge and Oxford.
I feel confident in saying that my enthusiasm for physics and math`s has been transferred to my pupils, not only through the results they have attained over my 30 year career, but also in some of my extracurricular work. I have supervised a number of teams of sixth form students in national competitions, and our successes included runners up in a national ‘Big Bang’ (mathematics and physics category) event and also first place in a national ‘particle physics’ competition. The latter resulted in us being one of only two schools in the world staying at CERN during the first switch on of the LHC, an absolutely amazing experience for anyone interested in STEM subjects.
I have also taught students who have struggled with some of the very difficult concepts in both physics and maths, but years of teaching experience have resulted in me realising that the first step is to boost pupil confidence, I haven’t met anyone who doesn’t come across some level of difficulty, no matter whether they are learning physics, maths or any other discipline. I know this to be true from my own personal experience of learning these subjects, but also from learning to play musical instruments, the frustration when you hit these barriers is annoying, but with perseverance they can be overcome.
I now wish to transfer all of this experience to tutoring students and help them to reach their own highest personal potential.

Availability: Although I am still an examiner, I made the difficult decision to retire from classroom teaching, after 30 plus years. But still wish to continue to pass on my enthusiasm and experience to learners via individual tutoring. Being retired means that I am available most evenings, I am also very happy to arrange daytime sessions if required.

Willing to travel: 20 miles

Experience: I have 30 years experience teaching physics at key stages 3, 4 and 5 and maths at key stages 3 and 4.
I have been a Head of Science for 5 of those years.
I have been an examiner over a period of at least 20 years for both GCSE and A level.
I have tutored physics and maths ‘face to face’ for a number of years and have been an online online. tutor for the past six years.
I have developed interactive software using Adobe Animate to create physics simulations that will help aid understanding and plan to incorporate these into my online tutoring in the near future.

My daughter was really struggling with her A-level physics and after four lessons with Ian is already feeling more confident and performing better in class.

Ian was very good at explaining the topics being studied and my daughter is very happy. We have not had many lessons yet but are happy to recommend Ian to anyone wanting help with Physics.
