Information about Roger

I have been fortunate to have been able to focus on the teaching of the most important and fundamental science to determined and able students for almost all of my teaching career. I therefore know that even the brightest students need help to link together new concepts and to practice use of key problem-solving skills. Having a sound understanding of Physics and its teaching means that I can help students of all abilities overcome difficulties and gain confidence in their study of Physics.
Physics is about understanding how our Universe works, from the smallest sub-atomic particles to the interactions between the largest galaxies. Study of Physics can be a challenge and success requires resilience in an atmosphere where failure is accepted as a step towards understanding. To experience those moments when students realise that they “get it” is the most rewarding aspect of this job.
As well as lessons in GCSE and A level Physics I provide support in the mathematics needed for A level Sciences and can help students to develop practical skills.

Availability: Following the government`s "stay at home" advice as their response to the COVID-19 pandemic I have been providing tuition on-line using the Zoom platform. Due to the difficulty of completing Coronavirus risk assessments for student homes I am currently not able to travel to student locations but I am able to see students at my house, with suitable controls in place.
Special lessons can be offered for A level students planning to study Physics or Engineering at university including preparation for Oxford PAT or Cambridge pre-interview assessment.

Willing to travel: Home Only

Experience: I have taught GCSE and A level Physics from 1988 to 2015, the last 15 years as Head of Physics. I have subsequently been providing private tuition in Physics and support for local schools together with exam-marking for international and domestic exams.
A local community college asked for my help to cover absence of a key member of staff and I stayed on there for a further year, teaching A level and GCSE Physics three days a week - which gave me time to continue with my private tutoring.
I have worked with Exeter Mathematics School as an Ogden Isaac Fellow providing courses and support for the Isaac Physics programme. I worked there last year part-time teaching A-level Physics and providing subject support for Year 12 and Year 13 students and continue to provide cover when required.
I am a part-time Associate Lecturer with the University of Lincoln teaching part of their DiPHE in Marine Studies, based in Dartmouth.
