Information about Alison
I am an experienced teacher, examiner and university lecturer having taught Biology and related subjects for more than thirty years. Currently I live and work in Cambridge teaching UK and international students both face-to-face and online.
Regarding my academic qualifications, my undergraduate studies were in Botany at Oxford University where I received both the top first of my year in my subject and in my college. I then did a PhD at the National Institute for Medical Research, London when I was attached to UCL. I have since taught at a variety of secondary and tertiary level institutions, including sixteen years as a Senior Lecturer in Genetics at Anglia Ruskin University in Cambridge. In 2012 I took early retirement in order to develop further my art researches.
I am a dedicated, enthusiastic teacher and much enjoy helping students of all ages develop both their potential and confidence in their subject of study and to successfully achieve their goals.
Availability: I am flexible in my availability and teach throughout the working day as well as during evenings and weekends.
Willing to travel: Home Only
Experience: In the last few years the main focus of my teaching has been Biology at AS & A2 levels IB, I/GCSE and 16+ Entrance (Biology). I am experienced in teaching all the main examination boards. In addition I have taught English and Science for 13+ Common Entrance.
I am also a CELTA qualified EFL teacher.
In my tutoring I am frequently asked to help students who are struggling with their subject and/or who want an intensive revision course prior to public examinations. As a consequence I have devised a variety of short and longer term revision material. These revision courses and, indeed, my teaching in general, has always been usefully informed by my experience as an examiner of both UK and International A levels.

My daughter loves this tutor .She is extremely knowledgeable both of her subject and of the past papers and how they are marked. My daughter says it has been extremely useful. I would highly recommend.
She is a competent, friendly and helpful teacher who went out of her way to make sure my concepts were were clear and my progress was up to the mark. She pushed me to my limits and expected nothing but the best. I would highly recommend her for A level Biology
She is a wealth of knowledge and highly recommend her.
Have booked 1-1/small group tutoring to come this year because my daughter particularly requested to have Alison again at this critical A2 stage, following her excellent A1 revision group tutoring last year.
Dr Alison, is a very good teacher and she understood me very well and found out where my weak areas in AS Biology U2 and helped me , to improve within a very short period of time, like six lessons.
Dr Alison is an excellent tutor,Kind and so reliable. She communicates with her students promptly and always has been very helpful. Dr Alison provides clear explanations ,therefore I lookforward to her lessons. I`m very optimistic of achieving the required grades. Wish we had found her sooner!
Thank you Ma`am,
My son has had 5 sessions with Alison so far and really feels that she is helping him with not only the understanding of the content of the syllabus but also how to apply it to the exam questions. Alison also sets Cameron homework outside of the sessions which she marks and then discusses with my him during the lesson. Alisons help has made Cameron feel more positive about achieving an A or A* at A level. Thank you Alison
Alison tutored me for the second year of my A levels and helped improve my grade immensely. She is very good at explaining things in a visual way with lots of diagrams and drawings but also showing real photos to add context. I felt more confident in class to answer questions as Alison made sure our tutor sessions coincided with the college topic structure. Not only did my biological knowledge improve rapidly with Alison`s help, but I also learnt exam technique skills from her experience as an examiner. Alison is a great teacher but also a genuinely lovely person!
She`s really good and would very strongly recommend!
Alison is Fantastic.
She has really helped our daughter with her A level Biology revision.
She is kind, has a wealth of knowledge, and understood what our daughter was hoping to achieve with her lessons.
And gave her more importantly the confidence that she could achieve.
So thank you very much.
Alison has been a lovely, kind and helpful tutor over the past few months leading up to my Biology A-Level. She has been very supportive, understanding and very quick to reply to emails! I thoroughly recommend her as a tutor.
Pleasant lady. Hope to do some more work for the new year. Merry Christmas!
Alison gave my 16 yr old daughter GCSE Biology tuition for the full academic year.
Emma was finding Biology a hard subject, and Alison managed to help her to find it much easier thanks to lessons that were very well structured and organised around Emma`s needs.
Alison helped Emma understand and revise topics that were difficult and go through practice questions.
Alison was very kind and very patient.
She also made the lessons very exciting and Emma was always very enthusiastic about them.
Emma got an A in her Biology GCSE. I highly recommend Alison to any child doing their Biology GCSE this year.
Alison is simply a fantastic tutor, you can`t get much better! I sat the new specification for Biology A level (Biology A). She always came prepared for sessions, she is very experienced and always explained how to get the most marks out of the paper. I would have struggled to sit the exam without her! Would recommend her to anyone.
I would highly recommend Alison as a tutor, even after a few lessons, my Daughter`s grades have increased. She is thorough, understanding, and and excellent teacher.
