Information about Helen
I don`t have any available after school slots at the moment, but if you`d like your child to go on a waiting list for September, please get in touch.
I`m a calm, friendly, supportive tutor with more than 20 years of teaching experience. One of the things I really enjoy about tutoring is the opportunity to tailor sessions to the needs, interests and experiences of the individual. I listen carefully to understand the goals, gaps and concerns each student has, and then work with them to reach their targets. I want students to achieve their potential in terms of exam results, but I also want them to feel more confident, and in control of their own learning.
I teach GCSE and IGCSE English Lit and Lang (AQA, Eduqas, OCR, Cambridge CIE), and History (AQA, Edexcel and Cambridge CIE).
In addition to teaching I have also worked as an exam marker, which means that I can offer students clear strategies for honing their exam technique.
Whilst not an SEN specialist, I am experienced at working with students with a range of additional needs including anxiety, ASD, ADD and dyslexia, including students who were/are home tutored.
Availability: My slots are usually:
Afternoon slot: 3-4pm (for home educated students)
After school slot: 4.15-5.15pm
Evening slots: 5.30 - 6.30pm and 6.45-7.45pm
Willing to travel: Home Only
Experience: I did my teacher training at Homerton College, Cambridge in 1998. I have been teaching English and History ever since, mostly with students in Key Stages 2-4, but also with A level and degree students and adult learners. I`ve worked in mainstream middle and secondary schools, in the education centre of an adolescent mental health unit and at at Cambridge Red Balloon, a learner centre for students who experienced severe bullying or other trauma.
DBS Check: Yes

Helen is a great teacher She formulates her questions and answers in such a way my daughter could immediately understand the content and context. She has a great style of teaching and clearly knows her subject to the fine detail allowing her to convey difficult content without going off tangent. My daughter really looked forward to her lessons and buzzed with excitement as she found that she was immediatly progressing in the subject and could fill the gaps that she couldnt get answered before. We would like to thank Helen for her efforts. Again a great teacher the kind you wish for.
