Information about Thomas

I am an experienced tutor, and a qualified CELTA teacher. I have taught students from over 15 nationalities, of varying ages, and have experience tutoring refugees and asylum seekers. Part of the course involved one-to-one tutoring, so I am capable in both large classes and individual sessions.

Outside of English teaching, I was an assistant instructor in the martial art Choi Kwang Do for two years, where I taught children and teenagers. When I was at high-school I achieved grade 8 saxophone and helped out music teachers in group classes. In my spare time, I have taught painting classes for over 20 people. I also have experience in online tutoring and building up an excellent rapport with students, through coaching youths and young adults on playing League of Legends. As a result, I am experienced in multiple techniques and approaches to tutoring, and will be able to adapt to each student individually.

I am a firm believer in teaching focussing on the student. My teaching style has minimal TTT (Teacher Talking Time), letting the students find their knowledge and solidify it with creation exercises. Making the language/knowledge memorable is key, and letting the students find their own conclusions, and concept checking their discoveries makes that language memorable. I enjoy using the Test, Teach, Test method. Placing the students in an environment that challenges them is beneficial, and this method means I can adapt my lessons on the fly to suit what the student needs. Most importantly, I am aware that each student is an individual. One method does not work for every single student, so I am sure to conduct needs analyses of my students, and tailor my lessons to maximize efficient learning. During my qualification, my assessors applauded me on my presence in the classroom, and how easily I engage and tap into students` enthusiasm. My teaching is energetic and encouraging, and I am always doing my best to go the extra mile for my students.

Concerning my internet specifications for online tutoring, I have a 50mb upload speed, professional microphone (Blue Snowball) and a Logitech HD 1080p Webcam. I have a high quality daytime light for lighting.

I met with excellent success on each of my dissertations. For my undergraduate degree, my dissertation on The Presentation of the Roman World in Videogames received 85/100, the highest mark the Ancient History Department had awarded in 10 years. I have spent the past year as a freelance editor, working on several dissertations and helping their authors attain 1st class degrees.

In addition, I am a qualified Essential First Aider.
