Information about Maryam
I study Economics at QMUL but was previously on a gap year, in which I used my time to explore my skills as a tutor. This started as just 6 hours a week at a tuition centre whilst I was still studying and working a retail job simultaneously. National Curriculum particularly for GCSE and A-Level is fresh in my mind and I make sure I am up to date with the changes in the education system as well.
Availability: Dependant on timetable: most evenings.
Willing to travel: 15 miles
Experience: From January 2017 to September 2017, I worked at two tuition centres and thus had a total of 20 hours per week across the two centres. I have taught a range of students Maths and English in scheduled class setting and one to one tuition. At times I juggled a group of students all working on different subjects and tried my best to cater to each individually within the short time period of 1 or 2 hours.
I had my own class of 11-14 year olds for 2 hours a week: an hour of Maths and an hour of English. The resources for this class were of a higher standard than their expected level, provided to me by the centre and I taught the Maths closely according to what I am given, whereas the English required lots of improvisation and spontaneity to engage the students fully.
This was followed by 4 more hours of fairly random but regularly attending students. This was often about 5 14-16 years old and working towards and at GCSE level:
Mathematics consisted of systematically going through the curriculum and making sure every aspect is covered in case they hadn`t fully covered it at school. I worked with the students to find out what their capabilities and weaknesses are to ensure they weren`t continuously working on anything that they didn`t need to.
Despite not being given many resources to do English Literature, I formed discussions and questions for students and where necessary I would form a scheme of revision and study based very closely on the specification provided by the exam board. I formed this based on my own studying for GCSE and A Level: I collated examiner reports, specifications, mark schemes and past papers for most subject so I knew exactly what to learn and what the examiners required.
For English Language, practice makes perfect, a discussion of the methods used to write followed by written analysis or creativity is how my students started. If in a one to one setting, we worked together every few sentences to ensure the tone is consistent and appropriate, whilst still ensuring the student is maintain a suitable level of independence which will be required in examination settings and in general day to day studying and life!
During the week, I worked with young children, often primary and lower secondary, and I was prompted for help when children are stuck with their work books. This requires quick thinking and a knowledge of methods and techniques for the entire nation curriculum for maths and English. I was confident in helping students working towards Year 6 SATs and can advise which resources are best to use.
Despite the large amount of students I dealt with throughout the week I felt invested in each and every one, and this can only be enhanced when helping a single or two students privately.
I continued tutoring for a couple of hours per week at a tuition centre in East London from September 2017 to November 2017, this was completely based on resources provided. I had to explain a range of mathematical and literary concepts to children aged 8-15.
I taught a class of 11 plus grammar school test students in the summer of 2018, this was a challenging, yet wonderful experience. I gained an understanding of each and every students` strengths and weaknesses, encouraging them to utilise all in a positive manner.
