Information about Philippa

I am a friendly and enthusiastic tutor teaching chemistry at GCSE, A-Level, and undergraduate level.

I have a BSc degree from Imperial College London, an MSc from the University of York, and a PhD from the University of Strathclyde, and worked as a tutor throughout my time at university. During my undergraduate degree, I studied a broad range of subjects spanning Chemistry, Physics, Biochemistry, and Maths so am well qualified to teach all aspects of Chemistry.

I have been tutoring in my spare time since 2009, and all of my previous students have had excellent results. I have tutored pupils from secondary school age to those at university level, and have taught across a number of exam boards and a wide range of academic abilities. As well as my tutoring background, I have 4 years of experience teaching undergraduate students during laboratory sessions and running small-group tutorials, and have also mentored several undergraduates undertaking placements in my research group.

As a tutor, I place a strong emphasis on understanding, rather than memorising. This means that my sessions are interactive, with a focus on working through problems together. I aim to help pupils develop a thorough understanding of the key concepts at hand, providing them with the tools to arrive at the answers without needing to learn long lists of facts. This sort of learning will help students in their school classes and future studies, rather than just teaching them how to pass an exam. I am friendly and approachable, and find that keeping sessions enjoyable and interactive helps improve a student`s confidence and ensures that they get the most from their tutoring. I understand that all students learn in different ways and I plan my sessions based on each pupil`s learning style.

I am happy to provide practice questions to be completed between sessions, though these are never mandatory as I know that pupils often already have very demanding homework schedules. As I have extensive experience in academia, I can also offer invaluable advice on the university admissions process, help with applications and personal statements, and provide interview practice if needed.

I am based in St. Leonards/Wonford and can tutor from my house or travel to you. I can also provide small group tuition sessions or online tutoring.

Availability: Available weekdays, including evenings, and weekends. I am currently doing freelance work from home so am very flexible when it comes to timing.

Willing to travel: 5 miles

Experience: PhD in Chemistry and 10 years of tutoring experience at GCSE, A-Level, and university level.
