Information about Lydia

Hello, my name is Lydia and I am a graduate with a BA in history (2.1). Prior to studying for my degree I studied an interdisciplinary arts based, university accredited course (FHEQ level 4) which included English, English literature, art history, history, classics, philosophy and music. During my degree I took several modules on the ancient world and wrote my dissertation on otium, non-elite leisure, and social stratification during the Roman Late- Republic I therefore have a sound understanding of classical civilisations as well a more modern historical education.
History is a particularly literary subject, this coupled with my previous study of English, and English literature enables me to provide good quality tuition in these subjects. I have a good command of the English language and I am an avid reader with a passionate attitude towards the study of literature.
I have recently passed the professional skills (in both numeracy and literacy) that all teachers in the UK must pass in order to become qualified. Further, I have recently been accepted to study for a Post-Graduate Certificate in Education (PGCE) –secondary history at the University of Oxford. I have also been accepted on to the Teach First graduate scheme which has a very rigorous selection process.

A good education enables pupils to be successful and live fulfilled lives. Despite being a high achiever at school I had a negative attitude towards school and learning. I therefore have a measure of empathy and understanding with pupils that are struggling to engage at school.
I tailor all tutor sessions to the individual I devise strategies and set targets that students find both challenging and rewarding. I emphasise positive feedback and take into account the needs of the student when planning sessions. One aspects of state education that is challenging is that choice is severely restricted as teachers are tailoring lessons to a class and not an individual. However, I feel that life is full of choices professionally and personally and it is important that an education reflects this. I discuss all decisions with parents and really enjoy working together in order to achieve excellent results.
