Information about Tom

“Wannabe Rock God(ess)? I’ll have you playing Smoke On The Water / Seven Nation Army / Wonderwall before you can say ‘this is ridiculous’.”

I’m a working Doctor with significant formal and informal teaching experience, and a keen passion for music since early childhood. A Self-taught guitarist of 16 years, with live performance experience in multiple covers and originals bands, I know how hard and uninspiring tuition can be if it`s not personalised, centred around your music taste and built around fun. I’m well versed in communicating and breaking down concepts into accessible chunks, trust me - I’m a doctor. Open to all regardless of experience. Neurodiverse legends welcome.

The First Session:

Every musician is different, so why would a one-size-fits-all approach help all students achieve their potential?.

This first lesson will serve as a getting to know each other session, allowing us to explore previous experience you may have with guitar and any difficulties you may have encountered in your playing. Together we will examine what genres inspire you to play and develop a personal tailored approach to address any issues, as well as create exercises and an individual plan based on your goals.

- Want to play your first open mic?
- Performing for your mates at parties?
- Learn your first shred solo?
- Want Guitar Hero III chops on your real fretboard?
- Got a love for all things gear?
- Absolute beginner?

No problem.

I’ve developed a level based framework covering the skills essential to being a well rounded guitarist, which serves as a great jumping off point for personalising your lessons. Areas covered include:

- Rhythm
- Lead
- Theory
- Improvisation
- Songwriting
- Gear, Performance and Craft (/Musicianship)

From this first session, I will begin to develop a plan based on what you want to get out of teaching, shaped by your favourite artists and the songs you want to play.

Suitable for all abilities and ages. All that is required is access to a guitar, plectrums if you wish to use them and enthusiasm to learn.

Next-level service:

I also provides a notes document that can be accessed any time to recall what has been covered in the session, as well as a video recapping the key parts to practise before next session, so you always have a quick reference in between lessons.

Want Online lessons?:

I use my expertise with audio & video production to give high quality tuition online. The addition of quality microphones and recording setup ensures you can hear me as if you were in the room with me. The details can be easily lost with cheap webcams and poor tutor setup. I provide multiple angles for the video elements, highlighting the details you need to learn your instrument in the comfort of your own home; when you need them, every time you need them.

Reviews from some of my clients posted onto MusicTeachers:

Tracey M. 21/03/24:
`Can not recommend Tom highly enough. I first booked Tom at the start of the year after my daughter got a guitar for Christmas. Bearing in mind she has never even picked a guitar up before. I messaged Tom and he asked plenty of questions to get to know my daughter and what she was after from lessons and who her role models were and favourite artists etc and then adapted her learning round that. My daughter looks forward to her lessons with Tom every week and he has really helped her become more confident. If you`re looking for a professional, friendly and reliable music tutor then I would say Tom is the perfect tutor for you no matter what level you`re currently at.`

Joseph S. 30/08/24:
`Tom has been a fantastic teacher. I have always been a lover of rock/metal music but never had the confidence to give it a go. Tom has made learning extremely easy and i have made significant progress in playing in what i would consider a fairly short period of time. I would highly recommend Tom to any beginners wishing to learn guitar.`

Max T. 29/05/24:
`Tom is a fantastic teacher! He has a great way of explaining things, his onboarding process was very detailed, and I am already noticing improvements in my playing after just a few lessons. As an intermediate player, Tom has been super useful in helping me to identify and fill in the gaps in my playing. Highly recommended!`
