Information about Jeni
I am a friendly, dynamic tutor with both a PhD and PGCE in English. I teach English across Years 7-11 and KS3 Latin at a local secondary school.
In 2015 I received my CELTA and am able to teach EFL (English as a Foreign Language). I specialise in EAP (English for Academic Purposes) but am very happy to teach EFL for general or other purposes.
I am committed to high academic and behaviour standards and trust that my encouraging and student-centered approach is effective in this area. My private tuition produces noticeable improvements in student confidence, attainment and ambition. I specialise in getting students the grades they need and assisting those who would otherwise not achieve their potential.
Availability: I am currently available for tutoring after 4.30pm on Tuesdays and Fridays. I am also available after 6pm on Mondays/Wednesdays.
Willing to travel: 10 miles
Experience: I teach at a local secondary school and have previously taught at the University of Southampton, the University of Sussex, and for the private education company Debate Chamber, as well as one-to-one sessions with KS3, GCSE, AS and A-Level students.
I work on spelling, punctuation and grammar with all of my students, but particularly those in Year 7-11. I teach students how to plan, edit and check their own work and, as a result, my students often go up at least 2 grade boundaries (e.g. from C to A or under the new system 4-6).
This is my 11th year of teaching and I have covered a range of subjects and literary genres such as Shakespeare studies, post-modernism, theatre studies, critical theory, Victorian texts, Gothic literature, and poetic analysis. I have experience working with secondary school students and have covered a range of GCSE authors including Stevenson, Dickens, Austen, Steinbeck, Shakespeare, Plath, Priestley, Hughes, Larkin, and Armitage. I also have an excellent track record of helping A-Level students achieve their target results for entry into higher education. Most recently I have taught works by John Donne, Christopher Marlowe, John Webster, Emily Bronte, Ian McEwan and Jean Rhys for A2 with excellent outcomes. Similarly, I have helped mature students to enter and complete Access courses.
I currently tutor KS3, GCSE, AS and A-Level English Literature and English Language to students registered with the examining body AQA.
I have also worked on the improvement of English language skills with international postgraduate students.
