Experience: EDUCATION: I bagged the overall first position (86.1% marks) in my S.S.C. (O-level equivalent) in Federal Board of Intermediate and Secondary Education, Islamabad, Pakistan across 120+ schools and 7000+ students; got three gold medals (Board, CoAS, and School). I then decided to take up B.Sc. Electrical Engineering and joined the prestigious (now 100-years old) University of Engineering and Technology, Lahore, Pakistan where I topped the admission merit list for BSEE, was awarded Roll Number 1 in BSEE and a gold medal by Students’ Union. I topped the first term exam and got another gold from SU. I graduated in 1986 with Electronics & Communication specialization.

EARLY CAREER: By then, I had developed a passion for teaching and so, served full-time, at my own EE department for 8+ years during which I taught various EE subjects/modules.

Ph.D. and UK EMPLOYMENTS: For my Ph.D., I moved to Essex University, Colchester, UK in 1995 and passed my defense/viva in the first attempt in April 2000. My doctoral research was in the machine learning area and involved the application of evolutionary computational techniques (genetic algorithms, genetic programming, and autonomous software agents) to telecommunication transport network restoration. I did a lot of C-language coding and published 4 research papers. During my Ph.D., I also served as a part-time postgraduate demonstrator for 3 years. I was then hired by Motorola UK at their European Headquarters in Swindon, Wilts, where I served as UMTS Research Engineer for 1.5 years. I was sent to Learning Tree International, London to learn Java over three short courses. In the summer of 2000, myself and three colleagues, filed a joint patent in the wireless telecoms area for Motorola that was granted by European Patent Organization several years later in 2006. In May 2002, I moved to Newcastle-upon-Tyne and joined Northumbria University’s School of Computing, Engineering and Information Sciences as Senior Lecturer. I served there for 7+ years and taught a number of engineering/IT modules and also supervised final year projects, industrial placements, and MS thesis projects.

SENIOR ROLE: After 14 years in UK, in Oct 2009, I moved back to Lahore and joined the University of Management and Technology as a Professor of Electrical Engineering. I served in this position for 10+ years and within that period served as Chair Professor (HoD) for 5+ years. Here, I was able to publish some high impact factor journal articles.
