Information about Simon

I love Politics. I`m a full on Political nerd who keeps up to date with all the current affairs. My aim is to make the connections between what is happening the world and the subject content that I teach. By doing so it helps to make politics a living subject that is both academic and real.
I like to teach in an interactive way that combines debates, discussion with a digital approach. By using weblinks we can see the news stories that relate directly to the subject content to help hit the AO1/2 parts of the course.
It`s also so important that A-level politics students form their own views on how well the system works. This helps them score higher AO3 but also helps them form the important synoptic links which are needed in paper 2.
I teach US politics not global and anarchism over feminism. However, I`m happy to read up if you have a particular unit I haven`t done before.
I`m currently a Head of Politics in a private girls school but was previously Head of Politics in a large state school in Hertfordshire. I`ve been teaching for over 12 years and have a wide range of experience with all kinds of students.
Other interests include video games, board games, playing the piano, military fitness and stupid jokes.

Availability: Variable. Would love to do some intense tutoring over the holidays but also happy to see regular students on week day evenings or the occasional weekend session.
If doing tutoring in person then either 2 hours to make the journey worthwhile or an hour in person and an hour of essay marking and detailed feedback throughout the week.

Willing to travel: 10 miles

Experience: See above. Highly experienced teacher, Head of Politics and examiner. Old enough to be experienced. Young enough to relate to students well.

Great tutor. He really helped increase my son`s interest and knowledge in Politics. He was energetic and great at using different methods to gain his interest be it going for a walk and talking over the subject or carrying out a question and answer session while throwing and catching a ball!

Simon has been marking my politics essays remotely since about December. I’m retaking A level politics and self schooling, and he was really sensitive to my situation and able to adapt his teaching style as I’d already completed the content, and just needed essay help. This was something I found difficult with other tutors who preferred to teach the way they were used to. Simon also took into account the grade I was aiming for- an A, and stretched me accordingly. He gave me really specific, constructive feedback via youtube and a concrete mark out of 30, which was always justified using the specification. Simon has worked as an examiner before, which really reassured me that I was receiving accurate marks. I could rewatch the videos and incorporate the feedback into my essay plans. He also provided wider reading and opportunities for further research- as I’m hoping to study Politics at uni, this was doubly helpful! Overall Simon was friendly, encouraging, and always punctual with his marking. When coronavirus struck, he helped me obtain a calculated grade from my school, which will hopefully get me into my first choice uni. Thank you so much Simon!

We asked for Simon`s help in mid-April for our son who is taking A level politics. We asked for a combination of his feedback on written essays my son did on a weekly basis and 121 sessions looking at essay plans. Simon very efficiently provided detailed feedback on all the written essays he was sent which our son found very useful. In the 121 sessions he checked our son`s politics knowledge and whether he had any learning needs, patched up his knowledge where needed, challenged him to construct essay plans in a coherent, logical and nuanced way (eg, there`s always a but), and helped him with exam technique and strategy. Over a period of just under two months, Simon helped our son from having no confidence in the subject or his ability around it to someone who can use his politics knowledge effectively and persuasively in tackling A level politics essays. As mum, I sat in on all the sessions with Simon, which he was more than happy with, and got an education too! A very good tutor - I can`t recommend him highly enough.
