Information about Paul

I am a fully qualified (PGCE), DBS certified secondary school teacher with over 25 years of experience teaching and tutoring maths (up to Higher level GCSE) and business studies (GCSE and A-level). I have tutored a wide range of students (and adults) from a variety of different backgrounds, specialising in preparing students for their GCSE maths exams and A-level business exams.

All of my teaching has been in highly rated schools where standards and expectations for achievement are high, and I take great pride in helping students achieve their full potential, working closely with parents to help in the process . I have a patient, friendly approach to tutoring which has been very successful over the years and I enjoy sharing my knowledge and passion for maths and business studies. The best way I have found to teach or tutor is to focus on building confidence in my students. I understand that many topics can often be very challenging, but my aim is to make students feel comfortable approaching any question that they are faced with.

I currently work part-time in an independent school in Northampton for 3 days a week, where I am Head of Business Studies, and I tutor in my days off and other spare time (online or in person). I have tutored a range of ages in maths, from Key Stage 3 to higher tier GCSE and IGCSE, and specialise in preparing Year 10 and 11 students for their exams. In addition, with my experience as Head of Business, I am able to give expert tuition in helping 6th form students to build their confidence with the challenging A-level content, and teach them the vital skills of exam technique and `higher level` writing , in order to boost their grades.

Methods of tutoring I use include using examples, to make sure students understand the content first, and supporting this with notes, videos and explanations. Then, I like to work through questions together so I can offer guidance when needed, before finally getting the students to complete questions independently. Of course I am happy and flexible to adapt my teaching and resources to whatever works for the individual`s learning style and areas of weakness.

I have experience of tutoring a range of ability levels, from those aiming for just a `pass` at GCSE, all the way up to students aiming for the top grade 9/A*. In addition I have considerable experience tutoring SEN students and other neurodivergent students with different learning needs (e.g autism, ADHD, dyslexia).

Availability: During the school term-time I have availabilty from 4pm on Monday , Tuesday and Thursday and all day Wednesday, Friday and Saturday. I am also willing to tutor on Sunday, usually afternoons are the best time. Please note that during school holidays I have lots more availability - typically from 11am onwards Monday to Friday. However the time/day of my availability is always flexible and I will do my best to fit in around your needs, either doing the same time each week (or changing the time/date if required)

Willing to travel: 5 miles

Experience: Since qualifying as a secondary school teacher in 1996 I have taught maths, either at GCSE level in school or as a private tutor. I have recently dropped to three and a half days a week of teaching at my current school in in order to provide more time to meet the increasing demands for private maths and business studies tuition.
