Students enjoy my sessions, make rapid progress and move to the top of their class. Students typically improve by 2 to 3 grades.
The skills and techniques taught by me are also used by students to improve performance in other subjects too.
I can teach online or at my home in Sidmouth Devon. I currently tutor via zoom, students in Spain, West Midlands, London and Devon. I am happy to teach the first session in your home if you live locally to build up confidence but students and parents quickly become confident enough to move online.
I also tutor 2 students in the school I was assistant headteacher.
I also lead small group Easter Revision Camps in Devon.
Sessions are interactive and work at the best pace suited for the student.
I am happy to discuss your childs progress at any time and offer advice on ways forward.
I enjoy helping students of all abilities. One of my students secured 12 A* at GCSE and 4 A* at A level.
I can help in preparation for an Oxbridge application including personal statements, recommended reading and interview preparation. In my last school I was in charge of Oxbridge and Medical school applicants.
Sessions are tailored to maximise the progress of your child.
A typical session may run as follows
1.A mini test on work we have covered in previous sessions. We build up a Q&A spreadsheet of key information. This is Spaced Repetition and Active Re-call in action. The most effective way of building understanding and knowledge retention.
2. Students are asked to re-call what they did at school that week. I cross examine to ensure they understood the content and address any misunderstandings. This supports the work the school is doing, builds confidence and competence.
3. I then prepare the student for what they are likely to cover next so that they are ahead of the class and familiar with content as it is presented in school. Students have the option to show off and practice their knowledge in class. The evidence is clear that this is the most effective way of improving learning in schools.
4 Next, we focus on areas the student wants to cover. We have about 20 minutes of reading, discussion, making notes, adding to our spreadsheet. I bring in resources and engaging content they have not seen before to bring the subject alive. Eg doing an experiment to work out the speed of light using a plate of grated cheese, seeing how to block a phone signal with aluminium foil how to see the invisible etc or mind blowing short clips.
5 We then test ourselves against exam questions. Looking carefully at what specifically the question is asking and how to get maximum marks.
6 Finally we negotiate what extra homework is set. I have found my students like extra work to cement understanding. I normally e-mail.notes & exam questions (with separate answers). Students are encouraged to bring up any questions they struggled with in the next session. Typically a 1 hour session with me will generate about 2-3 hours of active thinking/recall/practice.
I am confident your child will bloom, thrive and progress rapidly.
Thank you for reading! Feel free to ask anything.
