Information about Paul

I am enthusiastic and passionate about education. Students love my sessions and make rapid progress. I work with students of all abilities and help them meet or exceed their potential.

In the last two years I have tutored students attending St Paul’s, London, Altrincham Boys Grammar School, Sutton Grammar School, Colyton Grammar School, Cheltenham Boys College, Marlborough College , Torquay Girls Grammar School, Torquay Boys Grammar School, Maynard School, Exeter College, King`s School, Ottery and Sidmouth College.

I am currently vice Chair of Sidmouth Town Council having joined the council 15 months ago. My wife works for the Good Schools Guide. I have led a life of public service and educational excellence.

Results of students under my care 2024
Student LE - Comb Science iGCSE - Grade 89 (Up from 66 attained in mocks)
Student NG - AS Physics Grade A (maximum grade at AS)
Student N - Separate GCSE Physics 9, Chemistry 9 & Biology 8
Student GN - A2 Physics B (up from D at Mock)
Student JG - A2 Physics A ( having never attained an A before at A level)
Student JH GCSE separate physics Bio 7, Chemistry 7 & Physics 7 ( Having attained 5s at mocks)
Student RS - Top in School in year 10 mock exam in physics.

All students are tutored on line. Students love the sessions. This allows me to quickly bring in resources and instantly assess work to aid understanding which face to face would make tricky.

I was a Senior science teacher and assistant headteacher for 33 years. Educational consultant and tutor. I still get invited into schools to give guest talks.

Qualified Teacher Status, BSc Hons ( Leeds), PGCE (Bath) and enhanced DBS checked

Daughter Studied at the University of Oxford and read Medicine. Son works in Artificial intelligence at the Met Office.

Examiner for AQA and OCR

A level Physics and GCSE science (chemistry, biology, physics and combined science). iGCSE too.

Students enjoy my sessions, make rapid progress and move to the top of their class. Students typically improve by 2 to 3 grades.

The skills and techniques taught by me are also used by students to improve performance in other subjects too.

I also lead small group Easter Revision Camps in Devon on behalf of a tutoring company in The Good Schools Guide.

Sessions are interactive and work at the pace best suited for you.

I am happy to discuss your child’s progress at any time and offer advice on ways forward.

I enjoy helping students of all abilities. One of my students secured 12 A* at GCSE and 4 A* at A level.

I can help in preparation for an Oxbridge application including personal statements, recommended reading and interview preparation. In my last school I was in charge of Oxbridge and Medical school applicants.

Sessions are tailored to maximise the progress of your child.

A typical session may run as follows

1.A mini test on work we have covered in previous sessions. We build up a Q&A spreadsheet of key information. This is Spaced Repetition and Active Re-call in action. The most effective way of building understanding and knowledge retention.
2. Students are asked to re-call what they did at school that week. I cross examine to ensure they understood the content and address any misunderstandings. This supports the work the school is doing, builds confidence and competence.
3. I then prepare the student for what they are likely to cover next so that they are ahead of the class and familiar with content as it is presented in school. Students have the option to “show off” and practice their knowledge in class. The evidence is clear that this is the most effective way of improving learning in schools.
4 Next, we focus on areas the student wants to cover. We have about 20 minutes of reading, discussion, making notes, adding to our spreadsheet. I bring in resources and engaging content they have not seen before to bring the subject alive. Eg doing an experiment to work out the speed of light using a plate of grated cheese, seeing how to block a phone signal with aluminium foil, how to see the invisible etc or mind blowing short video clips.
5 We then test ourselves against exam questions. Looking carefully at what specifically the question is asking and how to get maximum marks.
6 Finally we negotiate what extra homework is set. I have found my students like extra work to cement understanding. I normally e-mail.notes & exam questions (with separate answers). Students are encouraged to bring up any questions they struggled with in the next session. Typically a 1 hour session with me will generate about 2-3 hours of active thinking/recall/practice.

I am confident your child will bloom, thrive and progress rapidly.

Thank you for reading! Feel free to ask anything.

Paul has been tutoring both my son, for A-Level Physics, and my daughter, for all GCSE sciences, this summer. He is a highly professional tutor, who is both teaching and more importantly teaching and organising my children to become self organised learners. If you read his profile you can see how he works with them each lesson. He follows this method and I am over the moon so far. I can`t wait to see how they both do in their mocks this October. Thanks Paul!

Tutors Response :

Thank you very much for your kind words. I am delighted to have built a great working relationship with both young adults.
