Hi! I’m Fran and I tutor sciences and maths, while I’m completing my Ph.D. in Chemistry at the University of Oxford. I have broad experiences teaching various academic stages, from primary school to university level.

My approach to tutoring is very individualised. I really believe that understanding individual students’ learning styles and motivations is vital for success in my lessons. Depending on the needs of the student, my tutoring style focuses on ensuring understanding and consolidation of class material, encouraging students to apply their knowledge to new problems, and setting mock exams to develop time-keeping skills and confidence.

I have a strong academic background in the sciences and maths and I’m very passionate about my subjects and hope to pass this enthusiasm on to my students.

Experience: My teaching experiences started in high school, where I tutored younger family members in National 5 biology. In one particular case, I was able to improve my student’s mark from a predicted D to an A in his final exam (equivalent to an A* at GCSE). During my Ph.D., I’ve engaged with teaching opportunities through chemistry undergraduate teachings labs, by delivering workshops for fellow Ph.D. students, and by mentoring and supervising students in my research group. My desire to share my love for my subject has led me to get involved in outreach opportunities for primary and secondary school students to encourage engagement with the sciences.

In high school, I studied the Scottish qualifications system. For my Advanced Highers, I studied chemistry, biology, physics, and maths, and achieved A grades for all four. (equivalent to A* at A Level). I also have a National 5 qualification in English. I achieved a first class honours classification for my undergraduate degree, where I studied for an integrated Masters in chemistry, alongside modules in biology and maths.
