Information about Harriet

I`m a recent Master`s graduate from Oxford in Classics and also completed my undergraduate degree there in Classics and English. At school I achieved four A-star A levels in English, Ancient Greek, Latin and Maths and ten A stars at GCSE.

I love my subjects and hope to work eventually as a teacher or in educational policy. By sharing my enthusiasm I want to foster in my students a love for literature which outlasts the classroom. To this end, the sessions are individually tailored and flexible in tutoring style.

I help tutees understand not only their subjects but the act of learning itself. Especially at secondary school academic success is often measured by ability to meet certain criteria so I teach my students what they are being asked to do and the revision/exam techniques which work best for them.

My sessions cover the material needed for exams but also act as jumping points for developing further academic interests. This can be particularly helpful for UCAS personal statements and interview preparation. In a similar vein, I am also happy to edit personal statements.

Availability: Available from September.

Willing to travel: 10 miles

Experience: I have tutored English literature and Classical Civilization at AS level so have experience in teaching authors as wide-ranging as Margaret Atwood, Sophocles and Coleridge. The sessions developed my tutees` academic plans for the future and encouraged them to connect what they were learning to wider interests such as contemporary politics or feminism.

More informally, I have helped to tutor friends in GCSE Latin and Maths. I have also been a mentor in a reading scheme for primary school children.
