Information about Bethany
Hi, Im Bethany and Im an Astrophysics intern. Last year I graduated from Glasgow University with a first class Masters in Chemistry, and later this year I`ll start a PhD in Astrochemistry. I started tutoring in 2020, and have completed almost 600 lessons across a range of subjects and exam boards. I`m available to teach university-level chemistry, whether chemistry is your whole degree or just a challenging module giving you trouble (organic chemistry being the worst offender!). Ive been through it myself not too long ago, so I get how overwhelming it can be - I`m here to help you boost your confidence and achieve your academic goals. In the run-up to exam season, I`m also now available for secondary school level tuition/past paper practice and marking in chemistry and biology.
I like to use a lot of diagrams and analogies when I teach to make complex ideas more manageable and easy to imagine. My aim is to help you really understand concepts from the sub-atomic level up, as an in depth knowledge and ability to explain why things happen is far more useful than just surface level memorisation.
Availability: Almost any time Mon-Fri, 8am-7pm for repeating weekly lessons or one-off
Weekend availability for one-off lessons/marking time on request
Willing to travel: Home Only
Experience: I`ve been tutoring online since 2020, both privately and with the National Tutoring Program, and in that time I have worked with many pupils across a range of subjects. I ask my students what they would like to cover in our lessons and then plan accordingly, making sure what Im teaching isnt just correct, but also lines up with the exact wording required by some exam boards. Diagrams play a big role in my lessons, I think its very important to be able to visualise exactly what we are learning about. This creates understanding instead of just memorisation. After going over the material with students and working through some diagrams, I move on to past paper questions as they are the best way to prepare for exams. Before finishing a lesson, I recap what weve gone over and ask the student if theres anything they would like to cover again.
The most important thing to me during a lesson is that the student feels safe and confident enough to ask any questions they may have - there is absolutely no such thing as a silly question. It actually makes me happy because it means I get the opportunity to help them with something they are actually struggling with. I understand how intimidating it can be for a student to have a tutoring sessions online (I used to struggle with confidence at school myself), and I will change my lessons to suit each student and put them at ease. Its much easier to learn when you feel comfortable.
