Information about Shakil
I am an experienced, empathetic and energetic maths tutor originally from Hong Kong but now based in London. I have 5 years of experience teaching over a hundred students and over 4000 teaching hours between the ages of 10 to 16, and a proven track record with secondary school entrance exams (year 6), Key Stage 3 learning (year 7 to 9) and GCSEs (year 10 to 11). I am able to teach either in person or online via Zoom using a free online whiteboard that provides visual and written interaction. I am currently based in Central London and happy to travel.
Availability: Weekday afternoons and evenings
Willing to travel: 10 miles
Experience: My specialty lies in working with lower level students who have fallen behind in their studies and struggle with a fixed mindset, low motivation and the notion that maths isnt for them.
I have an easygoing, lighthearted disposition that allows me to communicate effectively with children. I build trust and rapport with students, ensuring they are comfortable to ask questions and willing to challenge themselves and take risks. This creates a more positive learning environment which facilitates success.
In order to succeed in maths, you need to believe you can succeed in maths. That is why growth mindset cultivation is a core element to my teaching. A belief I hear all too often is that maths is a subject you are either naturally talented at or not. Students with this fixed mindset are those who are more likely to give up easily. I aim to empower students through short interventions using evidence-based teaching about the brain, to change this mindset. My goal is to introduce this new way of thinking and show students that through persistence and hard work, anyone can succeed.
Finally, many students struggle with maths as they are unsure of the role it plays in their life. Students see math as simply a series of procedures to reach an answer. This results in a fragmented view of the subject and they approach different concepts in math as being isolated from all the others. However, this view couldnt be further from the truth. I aim to introduce students to the idea that maths is a subject of beauty, creativity and connections. I believe that connectedness is a key property of having a profound understanding of mathematics.
